kind of. I was at a guys house to buy a large quantity of masterpiece in silver sets as pre arranged. when I got there he said I also have some other coins that were left to him by his Aunt. I of course didn't have an eyepiece or scales with me as I was only expecting to buy the silver sets but I agreed to have a look. he pulled out a few ziplock bags full of coins and this coin was in amongst them. problem is I couldn't tell if it was real or not but the guy was not the sort to scam people and the price was right, plus he included in his 2014 copy of Rennicks in the deal as he no longer needed it. I got the coins home and looked at it properly and started to see the markers of a proof strike. so off she went to the USA and bam 3rd one ever graded by pcgs (note the NGC ones are not actually proofs they are proof like strikes without the correct markers) and as far as I know only the 3rd one in public hands
Made me open up my Rennicks and still couldn't find any info on the coin.... Very Very nice find though!
Greenland: 1987 5 Piaster 5 ounce silver proof coin - Polar Bear (Mintage 800) $348 US (plus another ~$70 in shipping and import taxes) on eBay auction which ended this afternoon. I was actually originally looking for one of the one ounce coins, and wasn't aware of the five ounce version. After having recently received my five oz libertad proof coins , I just had to have this coin in the 5 oz size when I happened across it . I've come across a few 1987 (mintage 1000) coins on eBay , but none of the 1989 (mintage 500) . I am uncertain as to whether any were minted in 1988. (http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/greenland-piaster-x-5-1987-1989-cuid-137801-duid-341150). Talisman Coins has the 2012 (mintage 950) listed. I would love to have then 1989, but might settle (and be happy) with one of the other two. (Photos are from other similar coins currently listed on eBay) Cheers, Luker
I was happy to get one at last. An Australian 1934/5 Florin - with a Foy & Gibson paper bag. The bag isn't super , but still happy I don't know the full story, but apparently you could go to a Foy & Gibson store and get a 1934/5 Commemorative Florin ( in the F&G paper bag) by giving them 3 shillings in exchange. Cost me just a little more than that .. LOL.
Yes, very happy with the coin, and chuffed about getting a Foy's bag. As you said Boyou a bit of priceless heritage. Next time I go into town I'm going to see if I can find the old Foy's department store on Burke street. Found a picture of said store on the net and it was a very classic structure of the period, hope it's still standing.
Something a bit different, what I did NOT buy today at the local markets... Some 1937 crowns which the guy was claiming to nearly uncirculated (not even close), he wanted $70 a piece for them! Another seller has pre florins at around $25 (just general, not great ones), and a suspiciously light Morgan dollar for $25.
Rozelle. It was near closing time and the guy with the crowns clearly wanted to just leave, but I remember seeing some of his stuff a few months ago and it was clearly overpriced.
I was having a look at that same guy on Saturday arvo. He was selling an 1883 Morgan that looked identical to the stock photo on alibaba
