Hello Everyone, I know, i know, long time no show, have been busy and not as much motivation, but i have been online. I hope everyone forgives me Anyways, reached a numismatic milestone not that long ago and decided to maybe start a thread for it. So, if other members would like to share and discuss some of their purchases. Since we already have TODAY I BOUGHT ( Auspm ) and TODAY I BOUGHT ( Panda Style - Austacker ) have decided to have one for Numismatic Coins, but Numismatic in the sense that the coins are older or rarer - so maybe not really suited for Panda's, Lunars, Wavy 2 in 20 Cent coins, etc ( as we already have a thread for them or similar ) So show us your collectible Sovereigns, Centenary Florins, Dutch Ducats, Morgan Dollars, German Thalers, Mexican Reales, or older. Il start it off with a Tetradrachm ( 4 Drachms ) coin from the era of Alexander III aka Alexander the Great, it is about 16 grams in weight and roughly the size of a 20 Cent coin, made of silver and a pleasure to hold Am happy with the price i paid too ( between $80 and $400 ) The Reverse features seated Zeus with an Eagle on his outstretched arm, the mint mark is from Miletos, the crossed legs indicate that the coin was minted posthumously and some of you should be able to read ALEXANDROU written in Greek. The Obverse features Heracles draped in Lion skin, it has a relatively large test cut on the lower part ( probably done in the olden days to confirm that it wasnt plated ) Coin was bought on eBay from a reputable numismatist from UK, and feels authentic to me, but than again its not like i have held many in my hands before.
Great to see you putting the new camera to purpose. Here is my Spanish 1800 8 Reales ... Charles 1111 on the obverse
Stunning coin and so much detail left. remarkable. Thats one of the best ancient coins i have seen. Thanks you.
Oh I do like 8 reales... Only got the one but it's singing to me to buy it some friends. I need to scratch that ancient itch one day too - only roman coins I have are copper ones that spent a couple of years in olive oil (bought detector find coins off eBay) - you're supposed to soak them a few months in oil to loosen the crud, I lost them and found them three years later in a move, still in their jar of oil. Some of them came up quite nice, but all coppers.
Also a really nice 1930 half penny with 8 pearls and full diamond, if only I had its big brother Source: Source:
This dun look right..... The olive branch leaves are too crisp in the outstretched hand, comparing them to the thicker union stars! These stars take many years to show such ware. The leafs thin line pattern, should not be as noticeable, if at all. The eagle feathers are fake, and no iron shield covers the breast of the birds heart! Bet my left nut it is a fake....Arrows in the claw a dead givaway U did ask..... thoughts
then you would have your left nut still its underweight as well but it is an old fake and i didnt pay for it, came free with a bunch of coins i got today i think is cool and i can handle it without worring about affecting the value
Have heard rumours of a hoard of 1000+ centenary florins held by a single collector. Turned me off buying one.
I didnt buy this today , but one of my favorite, a 4 reale from Spain in very nice condition Phillip II era.. Source: really cool to see some interest here in older coins.
Why did it turn you off? You shouldn't let anything affect something you might enjoy, be it someone having a massive stack of something that would put you to shame... Or a wife
