Topless winged kilo

Got my 2012 Libertad kilo (BU) in today..

Wow, very nice! Can't stop looking at it. :D

None produced in 2013 or 2014. Who knows about 2015 & beyond. I got too antsy.

Mintage of 2,300.

I'm no high-roller, so I have to be really picky for the few kilo's I do pick up. And even, am limited to the modern & more common BU's.

Really like this design, and at 110 mm in diameter, it definitely "pops" in this size. I could take/post a photo, but my lousy camera won't do it justice.

Prior to today's run-up in spot, they've been going for around $700 USD, shipped, from Scottsdale (via eBay) -- sorry, US buyers only.

Meanwhile, APMEX is charging hundreds more.

Scottsdale ran through a bunch recently, typically 4-6 listings at any given time. Looks like only 1 active auction at the moment. Who knows if there will be more, either this weekend or a little down the road.

Will enjoy it for a bit before putting into long-term storage. Definitely a looker! Can only imagine what the more expensive proof-like is like in person.

Considering a 2013 Perth Snake next, if the condition & price are right. Though should probably let the Ag budget recoup a bit, heh.. A drop in spot would be welcomed, too.

Agreed!

But I assure you, this is the best it's going to get with a cheap 12-year-old camera that goes for like $25 USD, used..

Libertad kilos are nice...Libertad proof-like (PL) kilos are way nicer....and much lower mintage.

Congrats on your purchase!

And at $1,000 to $1,300 USD, a bit more expensive.. :o

Incidentally, Scottsdale was having eBay auctions on some PL's like a couple months ago.

I've seen photos & videos, and agree that the PL's are very nice..

Stunning coin, one of my favourites

Will just have to keep dreaming for now.

Eh, just so you know, I'm far from being a wealthy stacker/collector. Many others out there who buy & own multiples of what I do.

Lot of busting my hump, living below my means, somewhat fortunate/lucky in some small investments along the way, and doing without many everyday niceties that most others take for granted.

As for that last thing, for example: Somebody once pointed out in another thread that I'm taking photos of a kilo that cost what it did -- with a cheap old camera "worth" a lousy $25 USD (which I got for free, mind you).

Like I told him: Priorities! Buying a new halfway-decent camera would mean that much less of the shiny stuff for me. :P

Besides, it's not a very common occurrence for me.. I'm only a recent player in the kilo game, taking advantage of what I think might be a good time scoop up some larger pieces while I can. Believe me, if spot were even just a few USD higher, it probably wouldn't be all that affordable for me, and would instead just focus on smaller pieces, or try to save up in hopes that prices come back down.

If the few that I picked up in the last few months is all I'll ever get in that weight for the rest of my life, then so be it. And if spot were to get chopped, say, 25% from here, then I'll try to go for more. Next on the short wish-list is that Lunar Snake BU.. Not sure it will be a reality, though.

But don't give up the dream! It might take a while, but anybody & everybody can make it happen. I think people should really try to shoot for a kilo at some point, if they haven't already, even if that means going without a bunch of smaller pieces for a while. They really do stand out in a stack (as long as they're not over-shadowed by 50- & 100-oz'ers  ), and it's something you want to try to hang onto, as it makes them that much more special.

Kilo coins/bars, even the lower-premium pieces that one might have their eye on, are very much worth it. And definitely shop around.

Hope you reach your goal. Make it happen!

^^^^Great sharing of your personal journey Gatito. Hopefully our discipline to buy the shiney stuff will help us down the line. It's what I'm betting on. This world seems to be getting crazier by the minute...but hoping they can hold it together, well, I hope it never falls apart. I'm not one of those nut cases who wants to see the world implode just so that I can have a 'small fortune.' I have it as insurance in case it does. I think it will. But I'm hoping it doesn't. :-)

Man I wish I saw those sooner. That would fit very nice in my collection. I've been bidding like crazy on all the 2 oz and 1/2 stuff Scottsdale had put out in the last two days. Hmm maybe I can cancel my vacation and buy a couple. I wonder how the fianc would feel about not getting away from the five feet of snow we have...

Anything new from Scottsdale?
Sorry I meant the 1/2 and 2 oz libertad stuff there selling. Maybe if lose all the auctions I'm bidding on I can bid on a kilo!

What's that some sort of token you get at an arcade lol Blahhhh

I don't particularly care for the direction they've been going lately..

Rockefeller rounds, Exodus / Biblical Series, Bisbee.. Even the Tombstones sort of bite, save for the 5-oz which is just okay.

They can do good stuff when they want to, when it comes to the cast/poured realm.. (Scottsdale) Buttons, 100-gram bars, 10-oz hand-poured, Omnia rounds, 10-oz Shiny/Gloss Bar, etc.

Would prefer to see more of that stuff.

EDIT: Stacker Rounds are pretty cool, too.

I don't really get into there stuff much. I feel like it carries to much premium for just being silver bars and rounds. Not to say I don't like some of there stuff. I kinda like there tombstone nuggets. Not sure why though.

Scottsdale is pretty cool for branded generic. One or two each of what I listed above is about all I do. I wouldn't stack it, per se (Silver Slacker, anyone? )

I don't mind paying the premiums. I've paid higher elsewhere.

Can only speak for the 5-oz Tombstones. They're a fun novelty, albeit somewhat gimmicky. Glad I got mine. Stopping there, though.

My issues with them are: a weak stamp, the sides tone quickly (even without touching 'em much), and the sides are too rough -- have to be careful of any of their "neighbors" getting scratched.

Was able to score one these off eBay today!! Good deal I thought at 650$ I think I may like them more than my kilo horses. I didn't realize they only minted 2300 of them in 2012.

$650 is a really excellent price for these scarce and beautiful kilo Libertads. Keep in mind that the BU kilo Libertad is a different creature from the Proof-Like ("PL") kilo Libertad. Without exception I believe, far fewer PL kilo Libs are minted than BU kilo Libs in the the years that both types are minted.

Can't go wrong as a stacker or a collector with owning kilo silver Libertads in my view.
