Electrolysis perhaps?

Works great on old silver coins, but dunno about modern coins.

Otherwise just farm them out when making small purchases one or two at a time. (Say "got given this in my change yesterday...still legal tender.)

Otherwise just use use in parking meters, car washes or vending machines....no pesky human to give you funny looks. :D

Non Numi Cu-Ni coins clean up easily soaked in vinegar overnight. If you have a few in a glass you need to move them around like snaggs on a BBQ as the acetic acid won't be effective with coins piled on top of each other, but it works really well, just keep it away from anything worthy of a grade. Coke works too. That's weak carbonic acid I believe.

You can try taking them to a bank, but there is a possibility they wont take them though. My favourite for $1 coins is going down to the local club and slipping them through the pokies, then getting one of those refund slips that can be cashed in at the service desk :)

Found a 1949 penny today near Daylesford - out in the bush next to an old "off the beaten track" spring that is 4WD access only (and then only with ground clearance). First signal out of the vehicle was the penny - then it was all trash. Only spent about 15 mins detecting as it was at the end of a day out, the kids were onboard and shadows were getting long - and a creekbed crossing to and from this spot is a bit hairy!

One of the tastier springs too - but the dead yabbies in the pool of scum at the base of it were new :/

More info required to give you a proper answer.

Are you hunting for coins/jewellery or looking for Gold nuggets.

Most detectors have a discrimination function that shows if a signal is made by a ferrous or non-ferrous object. Some have a readout or display to help determine what a target is.

Depends what your trying to find, where and how much cash you want to spend. :)

That model is also good for detecting cash, flowers & chocolates & can even be used as a compass for long drives in the country
 
anyone near Sale in Victoria that would like to take me metal detecting :) I would like to have a go at finding gold YAY! don't have a metal detector or anything so hoping you would be happy to share yours for the day and show me how all it all works
 
Five nice alluvials fir a gram and a half.

Mate jumps out of car at a pine plantation and first thing he dugs is a gram and a half bit less than an inch down. Takes me all friggen day but Im still happy. :D

Sounds like good ground for a dryblower or similar?

Too wet, but it's on a private property that's getting a new home built on it. Owner has an excavator and He's not afraid to use it. :D
 
I am off again in a few weeks for a weekender. Hopefully this time I can add a real find (Gold) and not the junk I have found so far.

Nice work EM you always seem to find something :)

Selective reporting. ;) Been out plenty of times and get close to bugger all.

Its hard, but you have to keep digging the junk. Better to stick to a small junky area than walking miles and hardly getting a signal. I do both, but always get best returns around junky areas.
 
This is probably the most exicing thread on SS. Please continue posting your photos! Hoping to contirbuting when i get my detector at christmas!
