I bought mine at $280, when spot was almost $40

I guess it was in 2011 when demand was low(no one knew the exact mintage) for these coins....

I would hang on to them for another day :)

Agree...don't sell cheaply OP especially if your coin is in great condition.

The 5oz Rabbit is a key coin and even rarer than the very popular Tiger.

Not only that...it's got historical value that the average bloke isn't aware of. :)

H

can u bring me up to date an average bloke on the historical value? thanks

and how is the rabbit is the key mintage with double the mintage than the ox ? :/

dragafem...I didn't say rabbit is the key mintage...I said "The 5oz Rabbit is a key coin" :) Sorry for the confusion.

My meaning... the rabbit along with the Mouse and Ox are key coins in the 5oz bullion coins. (1st, 2nd, 3rd place) and since the series has quite a few more years until it ends (2019) they all could be good coins to have in ones collection.

Anyway...please don't look-into things too much...I'm not saying the Ox isn't a great coin it is.

imo I think the rabbit will out-perform the OX because a low mintage doesn't always reflect market appeal so although the Ox is second to the mouse, the Ox hasn't always been well accepted; sure...just like some of the once disliked early Koala coins they are gaining popularity and I hope the OX gains a premium just like the Mouse.

I think many of the Lunar collectors would have noticed that the OX for many years, had a similar retail price to the Rabbit and while Rabbit were selling for about $185AUD Jan 2011 to $325AUD August 2011 they had a drop in price around June 2012 to about $205AUD. Prices maybe on the rebound for these coins...I check ebay"sold" sales to try to keep a grip on prices.

So my historical rave :P which will probably be no good to you or the senior 5oz lunar collectors...here goes. :)

First of all the "Declared" mintage so far for the 5oz Bullion Lunars (Not including coloured bullion) are as follows:

2008 Mouse - 3,005 coins

2009 Ox - 4,720 coins

2010 Tiger - 14,533 coins

2011 Rabbit - 8,030 coins

2012 Dragon - 31,644

2013 Snake - details available March 2014

2014 Horse - TBA end of 2014 / early 2015.

.pdf

Obviously the Mouse and the Ox have lower mintages than the Rabbit; the Mouse is seen as the key coin to the series as is the Ox, but what about the rabbit?

Well...the mintage of the rabbit would have exceeeded the mintage of the Tiger easily if we compare the sales of the 1/2oz, 2oz and Kilo coins...check the mintage pdf for details.

So why didn't the 5oz and 10oz Lunar rabbits out perform the Tiger?

In short, The Perth Mint suspended production of 5oz and 10oz coins that year.

Everyone thought Perth would re-commense production but they never did...they were far too busy striking coins for the up and coming Dragon release and they had large orders for kilo coins which was Perth's production focus.

So the poor old bunny never got to have his day on top of the warren...he was very popular and still is but in 2010 he got culled for awhile.

Here's what mr. Ron Currie said about the suspension (Ron is Perth's International Sales Rep).

Temporary Suspension of 2011 10oz and 5oz Silver Bullion Coins

December 17, 2010

PERTH To meet higher wholesale demand for its most popular silver bullion coins, The Perth Mint has suspended production of 2011 10oz and 5oz releases.

In a statement released to dealers, the Mint said: Please note that demand for the 2011 Koala, Kookaburra and Lunar silver bullion coins from The Perth Mint has increased over the last month due to large demands on silver worldwide.

In particular there has been a large increase in orders for our very popular kilo coins which has outstripped our manufacturing capacity. It has been decided that we will focus our presses that make large coins on kilo coins only.

As a result, we have decided to temporarily suspend production of 2011 dated 10oz and 5oz silver bullion coins until further notice. Please note that silver 1/2oz, 1oz, and 2oz sized coins are not affected.

Discussing the announcement on the Mints bullion blog, Sales and Marketing Director Ron Currie said the supply of metal was not an issue. Before anyone suggests were running out of metal simply not true.

Its manufacturing capacity that is the issue here, he wrote.

So, in conclusion the Lunar Rabbit design was well accepted by the market only to have it's head on the chopping block along with the 10oz Bunny and the 10oz 2011 Koala (Koala is another story).

Excuse the typos etc...I'm tired now.

Cheers

thanks holdfast.very well explained:)I knew about all these but still a good read, especially for newbies.

on my defense I put "mintage" accidentally twice in that sentence. obviously I wanted to put coin...just did not happen :P

2008 Mouse - 3,005 coins

Hi,

This is my first post! Been lurking for a while.

I know this is an older thread, but I just sold a 5oz 2008 Mouse for $950! Nice little profit from when bought new! I think I have another one, so I'll have to start digging around the safe.

I understand the reason. I was just passing along the info from my sale as an indicator in case others are considering selling.
