New 2014 Proof Britannia is an absolute beauty

I guess my chapter in acquiring this year's proof Britannias is coming to an end... sent both my coins to the safe deposit box and I won't be visiting them for a while.

Took a family photo  Cheers silverpete I hope yours is OK!

That collection of proofs.... just, wow!

I was looking at my 2014 5oz and 1oz proof Britannias again yesterday before putting them into storage and I think this is one of the nicest proof coins in a long long time. No surprise the 5oz sold out quickly.

I think I'll order another 1oz now while they are still available :)

:p why is this thread keep popping up onto the front page?

I fully agree that the 2014 proof Britannia 5oz is the nicest one among all proof Britannias was tempted to buy another 5oz when it "reappeared" on Royal Mint website, however after some quick email exchanges with their customer service I was told that there are no way to tell if these are returned copies or from earlier batch. Early serial number does not guarantee they are from earlier batch.

That kindda stopped me from getting another copy as I do not wish to go through the whole replacement cycle again.

Also, if the remaining 5 oz proofs don't sell, the final mintage will likely be declared lower than the max mintage when the 2015 edition is placed on sale...making it perhaps sweeter for those who bought one (since lower mintage is generally always better than higher mintage in terms of perceived value).

With all of that initial forum talk/controversy regarding the First Strike 2014 5oz Silver Proof Britannias ( ? 750 ),
does anyone here recall seeing any being sold in any volume? I believe I recall seeing them being advertised on GovMint.com for a few days (? a week) , but I am not certain...certainly nowhere else , and I haven't come across any of those on sale on eBay since then...

Cheers,
Luker

Edit: I just read some earlier posts on this thread which reported that there were a few listed on eBay for ~$1650 one or two months ago.
I followed the link to one coin listed on 10/1/14 and it was relisted 3 or 4 times and eventually sold for $1130 US on 10/24/2014 .

It happens. GovMint was selling the PF70's for like $995 without shipping. They sold out very quickly at GovMint. Most who bought them from GovMint probably are just holding not interested in flipping.

Some of them like me didn't have cash at that time or hesitated to much (partially probably also me). Now I'm trying to find the coin somewhere for a "reasonable" price. ://///////

What I don't fully understand is whether or not the RM sold out of all the 5 oz proofs. I thought that not all were sold but at the same time, they are not selling more. I'm a little confused about that.

The 5oz has been sold out for a while. There's still 1oz proofs available.

Maybe they had some reserve in case of returns. I contacted them and they said it's gone. Afaik there should be also version without box, etc.

It's even hard to find some on fleaBay.:/

An allocation was sent to the US to be graded and sold separately. But overall it seems the 2014 5oz proofs have been far more popular than the 2013 ones.

There's still 2014 1oz proofs for sale at the Royal Mint.

Yup, I know, but I want 5oz. :/ Also I'm a little "afraid" that I will start collecting 1oz British coins once I bought first one. :)

There were a lot of people complaining here that they will return the coin once the RM published that mintage number is higher, but looks like not many did it.

The 2013 5 oz didn't sell out till the Spring of this year I think...is that correct? I am a bit surprised the 2014 5 oz sold out so quickly.

Probably nowhere else on the WWW was there more discussion about that coin than on SS...so maybe members here are the ones to blame for a large portion of sales. Maybe the RM owes the SS forum some cash for the boost in sales! :)

Hype combined with a fresh design that has been received very well. Everything just came together on this one. The 2014 Britannia will be on top of the dream list of future collectors.

Not sure if this was posted:

Royal mint britannia collection includes the UK's smallest coin
The royal mint's 'britannia gold and silver proof collection' includes the UK's smallest coin, weighing just one fortieth of an ounce and measuring eight mm wide. it depicts an elegant yet powerful art deco interpretation of the goddess, standing proudly in front of a globe whilst accompanied by a lion. each set includes a distinguished and tailored case and booklet.

And this interview with the designer covering details of the design elements:

Behind the design: Britannia 2014

Britannia, a flagship coin of The Royal Mint, returned in 2014 with a new design by one of The Royal Mint's very own engravers, Jody Clark.

The image of Britannia first appeared on Roman coins nearly 2,000 years ago and has been synonymous with the coinage of Britain for centuries. It was in 1672 that her image was first struck on the coins of Britain, and it has appeared on the coins of every British monarch since. The Royal Mint's flagship Britannia coin was launched in 1987 and Jody's design is the eleventh in the collection. In an interview with Jody, we've gone 'Behind the design' to find out what it's like to portray such an iconic figure

Thanks for putting more salt in my wounds... :/ :D
Sorry :)

Seriously though, if you really like the design, grab a 1 ounce proof while they are still available at the original issue price. Or maybe the 1 oz will never appreciate like the 5 oz and you'll be able to pick them up cheap in the future... who knows.
