Leyonhjelm - Pensions are charity

I wonder if Mr Leyonjelm also thinks a war pension is a charity ... because it is certainly not a consolation prize ...

What about the public sector? I know in other countries that they get government pensions above what the average person does. Is the same true here? Or they get it at an earlier age or whatever. I honestly don't know but am very curious because what I see in places like America pretty much amounts to fraud in my mind, government-sanctioned fraud but fraud all the same.

I completely agree about the pension being charity. I have no intention of taking it personally, if I can possibly help it. Never know where life will take you of course but that is my intention.

I can confirm that WA public sector employees get 9.5% super, same as the general public. Not sure for federal or other states.

You should care because there. won't. be. enough. spare. money. to. pay. you. a. pension.

Good luck claiming your "entitlement" if there is no money there to claim.

Finally, before anyone complains about hypocrisy from a politician, I should point out that the scheme giving retired federal politicians a generous life pension was closed in 2004. New politicians like me contribute to a superannuation fund, the same as everyone else who has a job. And, like everyone else, whether we will need welfare in the form of a pension depends on how much super we manage to save, not how much or how long we have paid tax.

Sorry it was re worded, what would you call free air travel and a car & driver for life?

Good for Nancy if you ask me, the family home should not come into the equation and Leyonhjelm can still eat my hairy beanbag

I gottcha!

Cheers.

Edit, not that it matters but Juliet is the daughter, Nancy is the homeowner with a penchant for pi$$ing it up the wall.

It's not an "extreme scenario". Plenty of people are behaving like that now, some of them even say that is what they doing on this forum.

The "family home" is sacred (even if you don't have a family), but it's also a personal choice to buy one and where you buy it. As it stands now, a popular ""retirement strategy" is for people to buy high value houses just before they retire, use their lump sum super to pay out the mortgage and then go on the pension.

If you seriously can't look after yourself in your old age, fine, I'm happy to contribute. If you deliberately decided to blow your nest egg, either on partying or so you can beef up your kids' inheritance, I'm not so inclined to help.

Please provide stats to collaborate with the above.

Below is a quote from this story: http://t.co/ssiOTm6n0K

You may not be able to see in full without subscription, I was able to on my mobile earlier.

Do those supporting the home being exempt from the pension test think this is a fair scenario?

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B-PUb86CEAA83sj.jpg

So the home has gone up $500,000 in the last year..Why not join the hi rollers from London, go to the bank ask for a loan against the increased value of the home ...Do that every year AND LIVE LIKE A KING.. Take it from the bankers and not the government.

This is what is happening in London ATM but over there it is a young mans game. :) :D

Interesting how people here attack pensioners because of the actions of the government and the extreme greed of the general populace in inflating house prices far beyond any reasonable value.

If they've lived on their homes for decades (and these are people who saw their friends and relatives slaughtered to protect Australia) and the gov. then decides to turn a blind eye to the flood of speculative and foreign cash that inflates real estate prices, then suddenly its those greedy pensioners who are to blame. Its pretty much a "blame the victim" mentality.

Next, as Miloman has noted, you'll all be calling for these old people to be not only kicked out of there homes, but also to be euthanised because they are a drain on the entitlements of the middle class. This mentality permeates such petty arguments.

Can you please link to where anyone in the thread has suggested this?
What's up with this entitlement mentality? Why cant you just let these old people be?

I get it that you feel piqued that some of them may be getting something they are not entitled to, and the bitterness is apparent like shit on white jocks, but it is not their fault that the housing market has been turned into a global investment vehicle through the abhorrent greed of the Australian middle class.

If they are working within the laws good for them, whats wrong with a person doing that?
Corporations pay as little tax as possible and claim funding where possible.
Im sure most people claim every cent they can come tax time.
I fail to see the difference nor the issue here.

You guys need to listen to Miloman. It is the delusion of youth that you will never grow old, but someday you will. And then the later generations will come for you.

If you can't show any compassion at all then you deserve everything you get.

Its hypocrisy, plain and simple. Its ok for corporations, but as soon as pensioners work within the laws to maximise their wellbeing then suddenly they are evil old scum. This is what happens when the ubiquitous entitlement mentality of middle class Australians is combined with petty greed and a total lack of compassion.
