If you found someone else's stash........

I read a story where someone posed a similar question. He'd found a stash of firearms.........

If it were a Roman Stash I'd keep it. Just like an old mate who's past on, he found a certain boat & it was full of silver. It took some time to notify the authorities. :) Well he only kept the really good ones.

If you found someones else's stack buried in the bush what would you do

In the bush, no contact details. Keep it.
In the bush, with contact details. Send them a thank you card and a box of tissues. :-)

I'd leave it alone and not touch any of it.

That is of course unless it was clearly some kind of antique find (ie like a horde of pirate treasure). Given Australia's fairly short history, however, the propects of it being a horde of antique pirate treasure vs the prospects of it being a living persons current stash are small.

Take it and leave a note in a bottle with contact details... because if you found it, it's just as likely someone else will too!

At least that's what I've done the last two times this happened to me :|
then use you charting skillz and speculate with it and when they come back in 12mo to claim just give them the original amount :P

I would do everything in my power to find the owner and return it free of charge. Serious. But that is just me.

These days with everyone suing each other and the Government prosecuting on behalf of 'victims' (even if they don't wish to charge) I am more inclined of leaving it there and walking by.

Good Samaritan deeds are criminal acts. One time I found a lost Casino Rewards Gold Card and was on my way home with it to search through the White Pages (Phone Directory). Police pulled me over randomly in the car on the way home and asked for my ID, the Public Servant noticed the card in my wallet and inquired about it innocently. I replied to the Police Officer that I just found it and am about to do a search for the person in the White Pages. However, I was charged with 'Fraud' (memory tells me also got slapped with Unlawful Property or something), because I did not go straight to the Police Station instead. I asked the Police Officer, what if hypothetically I instead responded I was going straight to the Police Station, would you believe me? The Police Officer said no, and he would of still charged me for Possession of Stolen Property. Went to Court over the matter and pleaded not guilty. Gave my version of the story. Ex-Crown Prosecuting Judge presiding over the case took the Crown Prosecutors's word over mine. Simply put, I was not 'one of them'.

Did you have a history of possess stolen property etc.?

This seems absurd to me...

I would eat as many coins as I could just in case they turned up and I could say I just got there and when they noticed the rolls of gold roosters were gone and lunar dragons and horses than I showed them there was nothing in pockets the only conclusion would be someone beat me there first.

You'd have to ask yourself "will I sleep easily tonight if I take this person's hard-earned?" You wouldn't want that metal to become a Tell-Tale Heart sitting in your stack.

If you would have trouble sleeping due to excitement over the new expansion of your stack that's another thing altogether.

@grinners
You have not dealt with much Law Enforcers then. :)

I'd say :P

Guilty until proven innocent @_@

Now regarding the thread topic:

I'd hire a helicopter with some of the stash and use it to scatter the remaining contents to the people below. :P

I felt sorry to hear about this MatrixOpals; I kept remembering this story over the weekend...
I came to the conclusion that if I ever lose something valuable then I hope somebody like you finds it.

Like grinners, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't hand it in. It's just the way I am and the beliefs I hold.
