Copper/Brass medals cast by the Shanghai Mint..

Picked up a Shanghai Mint Copper 1985 God of Longevity Medal for $80.00 from Luckmoneyro.
It comes with COA. I thought for $80 it would be worth the risk.
I will send it to NCS/NGC for grading and will see how it goes.
It seems a little funny but luckmoneyro has the same medal listed for $120.00 in another auction.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221038015413?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I am pretty sure this is a knock off by some private mint. Here is the actual one : http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/CertResults.aspx?CertNumber=2774666-005

Compare the reverse and you will see the difference.

Also for the Buddha medals those look like plated from the surface. Have you asked him about those ?

Thanks for the heads up . I noticed that the one for $120.00 has the same reverse as the one from NGC. I wonder what is the difference? He told me that the Buddha medals were brass.

Anyway we will find out soon enough when I submit this medals to NGC for certification.

That set the medals are gilt brass. From the pics they look ok. I may get a set myself and compare to another set I already have.

I also noticed Mark Bonke from the other Chinese Coin forum has been quite an active buyer of luckmoneyro so this is a positive sign I think.

I just PMed luckmoneyro a "veiled warning" that all his medals better be authentic because I will be sending the medals in to NGC for grading and authentication. So it will be better that he come clean rather than waste everybody's time.

Just got luckmoneyro's response. According to him he can't guarantee that NGC will grade this Longevity Medal but it does come with the COA from the Shanghai Mint. Anyway I told him to cancel this transaction and I will upgrade to the $120 medal. We will see what he says.

Luckmoneyro has also responded to the brass buddha four coin set. He says no problem with NGC grading these coins set because he has seen graded coins of this set before ( I guess boybluejay's sets).

I guess from his responses, he is selling authentic coins but he can't guarantee that all coins can be graded because NGC may not be familiar with them. The $120 Longevity Medal will have no problems with NGC either since he has seen 1 already graded.

sounds very promising. If the medals are legit they sell them at very good prices. Thanks for sharing

It might be good prices to us but he is probably paying next to nothing for this in China. Same with boybluejay.

Anyway you will see from ebay feedback that Mark Bonke has been busy picking up medals from both Luckmoneyro and boybluejay.

These guys are making a killing.

If you want to get your medals graded remember NGC will only grade and encapsulate modern Chinese medals that have been made at one of the three official Mints of China Shanghai, Shenyang, and Shenzhen Guobao.

This is largely untapped market, especially outside China.

I will suggest if you have contact in China, or if you can buy from taobao, you will get much better deal than you get on ebay.

For most medals, I am not sure if it is worth submitting to NGC. The medal market is very small compared to coin market.

The only thing is that NGC gives these medals instant credibility.
Is it worth getting copper/brass/bronze medals NCS conserved?
Thoughts anyone?
