I was browsing eBay just for curiosity for Chinese medals and came across this slabbed 1988 brass Panda Hong Kong Expo Medal.....

This is price during the golden or peak time of mccm. The price has dropped quite a lot. You can notice this seller items always in Super high price all times and sit there unsold for months and years

A couple of them sold at Stack Bowers auction a few days ago. The 68 reached around USD 2000 plus premium, while a 67 was hammered at USD 1000. The 68 was up from a starting at 560, so hefty bidding it seems.

Other interesting sales was a year set 1982 in 69 that went for almost 12.000. These rarely grade 69 as far as I know.
A couple of 1995 50y were sold for over 20.000 each, but strange thing was the 68 was final at the same price as the 69. I guess quality is not that important when it comes to such "rare" coins. Anyway prices seems to be going upwards for these coins after the drop?
A couple of Pagoda sets in mixed 68/69 were sold between 13-1500 and a Goldfish '84 in mixed 66/67/69/69 went for 1300.
More interesting a Great Wall Plum Flower silver proof 1984 (1982?) were up with a reserve of 3600, but not sold. Rather low grade at 65, but wasn't this medal sold for 15000 at an HK auction some time ago?
A Beacon Tower silver proof 1984 (1987?) were also listed in a Stack Bowers auction earlier this year with reserve at 8000, but not sold.
These iconic Great Wall medals are still not down there? And why this huge gap, they are both very rare? Well I don't mind as I still don't own any, but probably never will.

This tiger is restrike by Shanghai mint to list into online platform. At TOP the price is rmb2200 however it drop to few hundred now. It is 80 g silver and 60 k mintage if not wrong.
The price still dropping and not stable. Something's happen to it.

Shanghai Mint has bough a new minting machine which they use this brass medal as machine testing.
The mandarin states it as "prototype medal" which is misleading. It is test medal NOT prototype. Prototype always with weak strike and get low result in grading. Mintage much smaller than it and extremely difficult to get out from shanghai mint

Please not misunderstanding the item
It is a trend in china to slab the medal/coins directly from Mints few years ago. However, the market acceptance is good in china and demand a premium. This yet to be the case in western market

Andy, the online platform is really mainly for speculators I think. That prices are dropping very low and fast is probably the only natural outcome of a platform where prices were probably hyper inflated to begin with.
I wonder if that platform will help or harm the future value of MCC/Chinese Medals.
