Cheapest silver coins-Perth Mint/RAM

Hi there,

what are the cheapest Perth Mint or RAM silver coins? I mean those that are not so popular by collectors.

Regards,
Ozi

Hello Ozi, welcome to the forum. You could try koalas in 1 oz silver. But bang for buck at the least premium over spot would be the 1kg gold kangaroo or lunar. :P

Perth Mint's Koala 1oz coins would be pretty cheap. Probably the cheapest out of all the bullion coins.

I thought RAM mostly released semi numismatic stuff and wouldn't be anywhere near cheap?

In general,

Perth Mint:
Lunar Series
Kookaburra Series

RAM:
Kangaroos *

Definitely not as cheap as Koalas though since Koalas have unlimited mintage.

* Note: RAM Kangaroos are usually carded or encased or something and expensive. Definitely not what a bullion stacker should be looking at imo.

what sort of difference in price could one expect between a 1 oz Ag Koala versus a 1 oz Ag Kookaburra in the market?

What is the most popular weight of coin if you want to do trades or swaps etc?

1oz, 1/2 oz, 1kg?

Assuming current year then probably around $1-$2 difference per 1oz coin, the Koala being lower value.

1oz. 1kg is hard to sell and 1/2oz...is weird.

I have never seen this. They are always the same price, but I have not been looking long.

Does that mean the Ag older kookaburra, lunar, roo and koala coins have a higher premium of more that $1-$2?

I suppose the lower the mintage the higher the premium?

They're the same price some places for now but with the limited Kook mintage @ 500,000 and already fully minted I expect their value to go slightly up against Koalas of 2011.

Some stores and dealers already sell Kooks for a small premium over Koalas ($1-$2 premium).

Lower mintage isn't always higher premium, it depends if there is a demand for that particular coin.

In general though, older lunars are more valuable than newer lunars. For example, lunar series 1 dragons (2000) would be well over $100 per coin whereas lunar dragon series 2 (2012) are around $4x per coin.

Kookaburras, long story (300k mintage not reached etc) but their value ranges from 40-50 for now I believe.

Koalas usually have no special premiums.

Is Perth Mint taking over minting of SILVER Kangaroos?
I wouldn't venture so far as to say "taking over". The RAM Kangaroos are a long running series of Roos and well known worldwide. Kangaroos have always featured in our coinage. Perth have in one way or another (numis & bullion) had roos. Perth's venture into high relief ag roos is relatively recent but I do not think that "taking over" is quite the perspective. Roos are very popular overseas particularly US.

Bang for buck I would have said the $10 coins - you can pick them up very close to spot and they come with a guaranteed stop loss of $10. I know - only sterling silver (92.5%) but still best value that I can see.
