Buying Gold over the counter in Switzerland

I've heard gold can be bought easily over the counter in Switzerland just from bank outlets (UBS and Credit Suisse). I was wondering if anyone has had an experience doing this as I will be in Switzerland for 2 days in August and I thought it might be neat to pick up a small swiss gold bar while I'm there. I'm wondering do you need an account with the bank? Do you need to place an order (I've heard for small bars they usually have stock right there)? Do you need ID? Are the premiums high? Can you pay cash or credit card?

I'm not a huge gold bar collector in fact I've only got 2 gold bars as I am usually more into coins, however I still think this would be cool as I've been eyeing off the Swiss kinebars for a while now.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I'll be flying there in May. Will let you know as I'll be hunting for some coin shops there.

yes it is possible, all major city banks will sell over the counter. pre arrangement is requested for non account holders, no id required for smaller amounts.

i would actually recommend degussa as they have a nicer range if you are near zurich. geiger also has an office near the airport that stock a good range of gold and silver.

2014 I walked up to the UBS Gold counter in Zurich (near the main train station) and was able to buy 1oz kinebars with cash, no hassles and I'm not an account holder.

I'm actually entering switzerland tomorrow (there for 3 days in Geneva) anyone know which UBS or Credit Suisse Branch to go to for gold?

Sorry guys should have said earlier, this was a great success, picked up a 5g kinebar with is gorgeous and a 100g silver bar. I went to UBS and they had no problem. I had to pay cash but I got quite a good rate. I calculated the price to be about 1.3% over spot for the gold bar and about 1.1% for the silver bar. However luckily I had purchased my cash at a much higher exchange rate than when I got there so it became effectively at spot for the silver bar (which I paid for in Euros). Unfortunately I paid for the gold bar in francs and would have lost a bit on exchange fees and stuff when I got the cash. Anyway they have a huge range and very helpful staff.

if you are not buying kilos of gold there is no prior registration needed and also no bank account. who states such fake rumors?!?!?!
