In all seriousness, I would suggest budgeting approx 0.5-1% PA of the value of your stack to storage and protection.

So if you have a $100,000 stack you might consider paying $1000 per year in storage fees.

If you have $5000 stack buy a small office works safe $100-200 once and consider it's "life" of depreciation up once the value of your stack increases enough that the security of the safe isn't adequate.

A CMI mini guard will cost you $600 but only has an overnight cash rating of $10,000 but it's solid and has enough volume to keep approx 200 x 1kg silver bars.

A safe with overnight cash rating of $100,000 will set you back about $5000 but weighs over 700kg and requires special delivery with a very obvious truck and pneumatic trolley. Kinda eliminates the secrecy of your stack.

If you only hold $1000 worth...sock drawer.

Well I've noticed over the years that it's not so much the aim but underestimating the distance they need to stand from the bowl, or perhaps it's overestimating their extension - hence that gap in the seat.;)

holy shit that is hardcore. But you're more likely to kill yourself. Sounds good initially (weirdness factor).. then if there is a break in, the steel box is touched, the guy gets fried and killed and you end up with a dead body in your house. There will be a police investigation which no doubt uncover why on earth you had a steel box electrified with the house mains. SHIT!

Caveat - Don't do it especially if you have children (or if you are able to either buy a safe, wander down to a storage facility or can keep your trap shut about your stack).

    Interesting concept though!!

One of the best ways to get robbed is loose lips. Most people don't have bullion. So most robbers are NOT looking for bullion. Don't tell people about it. The floor safe is a great idea. I like the idea of getting it put in a corner of a room under the carpet with some furniture over the top.

I'm in a similar dilema at the moment.
Building my stack now and weighing up the pros and cons of:
    - Bank deposit box
    - Private vault
    - Home safe

Must say I'm leaning towards a deposit box. Thoughts?

Worked with a guy (ex CIA), who had no qualms about doing this. He even told me how, if something did happen, he was going to dispose of the result!

One day he got burgled, and the intruder got the belt of his life from a gerry rigged 240VAC set up. He never came back!

I don't think it's wise to post too many details on this forum.

There are different 'levels' to security and probably the most important one is not talking about it!

Generally though you have to trust SOMEONE - at some point.

Beyond that that there is physical security, disguise, camoflage and protection from metal detectors to consider.

Whatever method you use DO SOME RESEARCH - as many 'common' methods have some well known weaknesses.

Don't assume you can outsmart the crooks. A good metal detector can quickly find nearly ANY hidden PM in a normal house.

Bank deposit box. It's relatively cheap and it also gives you a good place to store important documents and data away from your house, not to mention you get to feel like an international man of mystery whenever you make a deposit or withdrawal.

I've always wondered about bank deposit boxes.
in Canberra we are VERY limited. waiting list is +5 years and only NAB have room...and that's not even a box. you supply a box and they store it for you. you also sign something saying they are not responsible if it goes missing- rubbish.

Do the boxes people have in other states look like the one in movies? Wall's and walls of boxes? and you have key, and they leave you a room where you can look at stuff your self?

    cheers
