Anyone think the 1oz Silver Kangaroos are undervalued compare to bullion coins like the Kooks? For example, you can pick up a 2005 Silver Kangaroo for around $40 and a 2005 Kook for about $40, but the mintage for the 2005 Kangaroo was 25,000 and for the Kook 80,000. Pretty much similar story of kook/lunars vs Kangaroos, always many more times kook/lunars than kangaroos but pretty much the same prices. Kangaroos undervalued given their much lower mintages?
I wish I could find the Roos for $40 in the US. Whenever I look on US eBay, kangaroos are selling for much higher premiums than kooks. I'd estimate most go for $10USD more than kooks on average. I'd say most of the auctions are ending between $50-60 not including shipping.
Ditto in the UK Kangaroos are selling at a premium to Kooks so buy them while you can if priced similarly.
The only year priced at less than $50 in the 2011 Mcdonald's catalogue is the 1993 (at $40), so if you can pick up silver kangaroos for less you'd be doing well. I'd hazard a guess that because the 'roos are mounted on cards, people are more likely to only have single coins whereas Perth Mint coins have no-frills packaging that makes them easier to store.
I think the disinterest in this thread (no offence intended meant at all to you Matthew, just making a point) shows how unregarded the Silver Kangaroo is!
yeah true clawhammer but I cant help but think if you can pick up roos for the same price as kooks/lunars they will have a higher numismatic premium in the years to come. 20,000 Kanga's are now minted each year, compare that to 300,000 Lunars and 500,000 kooks......
My guess is the mintage is too small, doesn't have enough collector base. Wait till RAM strike 1 million pieces for a particular year ... like the proof pandas, they will rise from the dead. Previously, Kooks were pretty cheap until lately, from 2008 they were sold out, collectors start chasing the earlier versions. Ditto for Series 1 lunars. I could get them really cheap in 2008 for a 1oz & 2oz Dragon but once the Series 2 kicked off, prices flew, of course, rising silver price is a huge push factor.
lol damns the 1990's and 2000's were going for the same price... they better be there tomorrow or else im gonna shot myself for picking the wrong coins
$40 a roo is only a reasonable price, nothing special. If you buy a bunch off feebay and get combined post you can get the coin+delivery for $40 a piece.
on ebay they like $50 min plus shipping.... ive seen a 2006 one sell for $70 and this was back then when silver was $30 a oz.
I wonder if you will devalue them if you remove say 1993-2013 coins (20 coins) and put them individually in a case without the cards? Its why I prefer the Lunars over Kooks, Kangas and Koalas (why do they all start with "K"??) because you get to have a series "set" of 12 coins. There is a beginning and there is an end to them. With all the other bullion coins, including Maples, ASE's etc, there is no end to them. You can make a set say 1990-2010 but then the coins kept being produced, so the set year by year becomes incomplete. Not so with the Lunars.
I think the roos are unvalued. Because i am from germany i do not have the chance to get them on prices around 40$, but if i could - i would. I bought some of the the years 2008 - 2011. The ones from 2008 are hard to find, so i bought some from a australia coin dealer. Can you say something about how popular the coins ( 2008 - 2011) are in australia. thanks Ninteno
What prices are the Roos going for in Germany ? 2007 Roo is not getting $250 a coin. All other years you can still get for $50 or less.
This one is already over $300 on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Australia-20...180640532840?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item2a0f03c968 2007 is the key date only 4000 made. The frosted CuN version looks very similar so be careful when you buy. I bought mine for $100 last January and felt overpaying that time, but I wanted to complete my set. Few months later picked up a second one for $46 without the card, but the carded version is the one with the higher premium.
