This article annoyed me, especially the bit in bold.

How is bolded bit different from an industry or retail super fund?

They still take their commission, REGARDLESS of how the fund performs.

They hardly 'own' their losses .. the member does anyway!!!

Workers warned about risks of super smurfs

BY:PETER TRUTE, AAP SENIOR FINANCE WRITER From: AAP March 26, 2013 1:19PM

THEY'RE called SMSFs - self-managed super funds - but Australia's foremost authority on superannuation prefers to call them smurfs.

And while the do-it-yourself retirement saving may soon rival the little blue gnomes for popularity, Jeremy Cooper warns there are risks involved - like the possibility of "blowing up" your life savings.

Mr Cooper, chair of the comprehensive 2010 Cooper Review of Australia's superannuation system, warned that SMSFs come with risks that did not exist with retail and industry funds overseen by the prudential regulator, APRA.

"You can blow yourself up. In theory, by reason of bad luck or fraud or other happenstance you can theoretically lose your entire investment savings and this is where the self in self-managed comes to the fore," Mr Cooper said at an Australian Securities and Investments Commission conference in Sydney.

"There's a big difference between a self-managed fund and an APRA-regulated fund in this respect.

"There's no special statutory safety net in the event of a fraud."

Self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) - or "smurfs" as Mr Cooper has dubbed them - are the fastest-growing sector in Australia's $1.4 trillion superannuation industry and consultants at Deloitte have estimated the total value of SMSFs will pass $500 billion this year.

Fund numbers are expected to hit one million.

Mr Cooper warned, however, that while SMSFs offer greater control and potentially lower costs, fund owners were ultimately responsible for their own performance.

"You win your own wins and you own your own losses," he said.

Mr Cooper said it was important to make those risks clear and those who were not comfortable with the risks could choose another option.

Another key point is that volatility is not well understood because of the broader superannuation industry focus on long-term performance.

"A loss of 10 per cent in year one and a gain of 10 per cent in year two doesn't put you back square," Mr Cooper said.

"I think a lot of smurf investors are underestimating or undervaluing the harm that volatility does to their portfolios."

Mr Cooper warned that SMSF weak points, according to Tax Office data, were asset allocation, complexity and cashflows to retirees - though that last element is not restricted to self-managed superannuation.

Super, what a scam.
They (amp ect) can invest your money in what ever they like. Does not matter much to them if it was a good investment or not. It's your loss not theirs. Think GFC.
I see super as, a big pool of money the government has access to(through the funds) to invest(deposit)into their hair brained ideas.
Ie we will legistrate that most must have super, if they(the funds) put the money into govt infrastructure.

I like the latest ad for super I saw on TV last night.I think at the end of it it says "Because Super is Your Money" or something like that.I think think they mean "Because Some of it is Your Money". :)

My industry fund blew-up my life saving, which is why I chose a SMSF.

If SMSF are the fastest growing sector of super then maybe this expert might like to figure out why that is, and rather than label them as smurfs (Is that even an insult, I am not insulted, just confused by the label) he could try to understand why people want to have greater control, lower costs and responsibility for their own performance.

Maybe the answer to what is wrong with the Industry options is staring him in the face.

Unfortunately the theives are forcing us to put in even $$ more into super (the 12% target by 2019)!!!

What they really really mean is "Because Super is OUR Money" and you're lucky we only skim 1% off the earnings every year!

Fortunately the team at GetUp are on the case

Dear Jis,

Superannuation. It has the power to bore you in a single word, but this video won't!

Today it was revealed that the government is considering superannuation reforms this year - an incredible opportunity to transform a system currently rigged to only benefit the super wealthy.

Check out the video and spread the word.

Let's do this,

Apparently I am super wealthy, I must remember to tell my wife, she will be so pleased.

GetUp = socialists

Here is their reasoning:

Australia must change current superannuation laws which provide the greatest benefit through tax concessions to the wealthiest Australians while the least well off get nothing. This money must be distributed to those who will struggle to get by in their retirement, or to areas like education, health, infrastructure and renewable energy production.

I urge you to follow through on your intention and make big changes to superannuation to make the system fairer and more equitable in the budget this May.

What a croc of sh1t!!

So only having 15% of your super contributions stolen by gubmint is a so-called "concession" and made out as if the stupid gubmint is actually GIVING THAT TO PEOPLE! What a load of horsesht...

If the idea behind super is to fund ones own retirement - thereby saving gubmint from having to support that person/family via the aged pension - then ALL SUPER CONTRIBUTIONS SHOULD BE COMPLETELY TAX FREE!!!

Currently gubmint steals 15% - so it gives sweet f..c.ll!!! It STEALS...

If anyone could be stuffed they should start try to use their site to start a campaign to promote a new coal mine or abolish minimum wage laws etc. I'd sign it in a second but I can't be stuffed trying to get it up.

It actually goes up from 1/7/2013 - not a big increase but the Super Guarantee is 9.25% from July.

I was at a conference recently and the impost being placed on small business and SMSF trustees is increasing out of sight. The new SMSF auditor registration requirements - this is the requirement of auditors to be registered with ASIC (and their corresponding bureaucracy) are an absolute joke. At this stage it's looking like the cost increase for our SMSF clients will be significant.

Gargamel always was trying to catch the Smurfs and eat them, but he never succeeded.

Why am I not surprise the brainless zombies at Getup are behind stealing our superannuation. Spend retirement savings on 'renewable energy'? Boneheads.

Apparently I am super wealthy, I must remember to tell my wife, she will be so pleased.

Go to the direct youtube page of the Getstuffed video, the comments section is full, full, of 19 year old socialist uni students saying that all you horrible rich people who have any super at all and know what they're doing should lose it all to be spent on the Gonski 'reforms'.

Apparently I'm a horrible rich person too. My wife will be pleased, even though we're asking where the extra $100 on our recent energy bill will come from. Just an aside, since the carbon tax came in, our energy bill has risen about 25%....

Nice to see that it is not all one sided, lots of people who are saving for Super have chimed in. I would but I think you have to sign up or register or something so I just gave it a thumbs down instead.

So far 79 Likes and 10 Dislikes
