I think though that many people need to think outside the box to see the way through the control. Who says you must have two cars? Who says you must have the new phone? Who says you must do this this and that?

My grandfather (for relaxation) used to potter in his shed, grow plants and listen to the wireless while seated on a comfortable chair.

So, I need to readjust my own expectations, I presume others do too.

Yes but the problem as AusPM pointed out is that we are being screwed on the absolute necessities of life - shelter, education, health, gas, water and electricity.

Not much we can do there.

Haha yeah, I noticed that too. Back before he was so well known, and didn't have so many grey hairs.

Apparently the departure tax for leaving Australia jumped from $48 to $55 in this budget, and is now linked to CPI as well so it will keep going up.

SYDNEY motorists could be charged a "distance toll" based on the number of kilometres they travel, the NSW state government says.

Speaking at an Infrastructure symposium on Tuesday, NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said a distance toll was one of the options the government had asked Infrastructure NSW to consider to help fund future developments.

However, he ruled out a congestion tax.

A distance tax would charge motorists on the basis of kilometres travelled, as opposed to a congestion tax, which would apply in the most congested areas.

Mr Gay told the gathering of infrastructure industry leaders he wouldn't rule out levying new road charges in the future.

"One of the things we've asked Infrastructure NSW ... would be to look into that sort of charging in the future," he said.

"Whether that's a distance toll, the key that we're looking for is a degree of fairness and an ability to deliver new infrastructure for that state for the state."

A government spokeswoman said the NSW government would consider recommendations contained in the Schott report into infrastructure spending.

The report, released in January, also canvassed the idea of a distance toll.

It recommended the treasury and Infrastructure NSW investigate toll arrangements and provide options to the government on opportunities to make the toll road network more efficient.

This will never happen, someone surely will have the light turn on and realise that this will increase congestion in places like the city. Imagine how much the demand would rise if people knew the cost of commuting was going higher the further out you lived from Sydney?

What's this "soon?"

When was the last time you bought fuel? Did you pay GST on the tax component of that fuel?

Or when was the last time you registered a new car? Did you pay tax on the GST and other taxes on that car?
