Why is gold so valuable ?

Because God says so:

Genesis 2:11-12 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

The word good was translated from the Hebrew word towb which can also translated precious, prosperity, wealth etc.

So, do we actually have a definite answer why gold is so valuable? Or Bernanke still got it right with his "tradition".
 
I think Bernanke got it right when he said "Tradition" (what an understatement) but he did not go further - he probably knows about the topics we have touched on in this thread.

The book "The Power of Gold" got a review from Paul Volker - the ex chairman of the Federal Reserve read the book and knows about it - i would say Bernanke does too.

When Bernanke said gold is not money - he was right - it is power.

Gold is valuable because humans give it such, it has no magical 'tits and is on fire properties'. If I could convince enough people that an ant stuck to a piece of tape was valuable we could use that as money. It is a medium of exchange and a store of value. Paper/electronic money is an excellent medium of exchange and far more convenient than gold, however it is piss poor as a store of value. As mentioned earlier, difficult to get, represents labour/energy etc, in short not easily created. as oppose to pressing CTRL+P.

Again, I emphasise that I prefer gold in my safe, than numbers on an ATM screen :)
 
Gold is valuable because it was, it is and will be accepted as universal currency beyond time and border. Empires rise and fall, currencies fail but the gold is above that. You can exchange gold (as well as silver) in any time and any country for some services unlike the currencies. If I come to the farmer in NZ with a bunch of russian rubles in hand asking for a glass of milk he'll either give me it for free or deny my request. Because he can't use those russian rubles to get anything for himself from his neighbors. But if I show him a silver or gold coin he'll easily accept 'cause he can use that to get something he needs from others as well. Yes, it's a historical occurrence that gold and silver is money since the very beginning. Gold is also practically indestructible by natural events.

Our paper money produced by indebted economies is unworthy compared with PMs. Should (God forbid!) a terrible natural disaster, military conflict or economic collapse emerge, paper money will turn almost useless as the issuing country will be unable to provide enough necessities for it's people while having a ruined economy. But gold and silver gonna work - they will at least have SOME value for suppliers.
 
It is a beautiful metal that doesn't tarnish or rust.
It has a wonderful yellowish colour.
It is inert and can only be dissolved in Aqua Regia ( Concentrated fresh Nitric and Hydorchloric acid mix )
It can be beaten to a semi transparent thickness ( gold leaf ).
It is soft and can be pressed into shapes or melted quite easily.
It has been adorned since it was used for decorative purposes associated with Kings and Rulers.
A truly noble metal and relatively scarce compared to other common metals.
Lasts forever !

Don't laugh, but I have actually seen someone levitate once. Until the power was turned off. :) True story!
