Preppers should stack ammo, food, and tools, not PMs.

With a GSR of about 70:1 silver vs gold would it not make more sense to buy silver? If the GSR tightens up say 40:1 you could sell the increased amount of silver you originally purchased and get more gold for it at the lesser ratio.

That's my thinking. Which PM will triple or quadruple in value first? Gold or silver?
My stack reflects that I think the latter will perform better. :)
 
Looking at it another way using math to simplify and not counting premiums.

If a person were able to accumulate 10oz of gold and the ratio was 100:1 they could trade the gold for 2 monster boxes of ASE's. Then when the ratio dropped to 50:1 they could trade the two monster boxes for 20oz of gold without spending a penny of fiat and essentially double their gold holdings.

There's a few assumptions here but if one were to believe the ratio were going to tighten to more historical levels , now is the time to stack silver over gold.

It does make one wonder if we will ever get closer to the standard 13:1 ratio of yore. Probably not since that was when they were used as a currency. I often wonder what would happen if society went back to some sort of gold standard and use silver as well for everyday transactions. Would 1oz of silver be worth what any other be worth? Would blow the hell out of buying cool medals like the momento mori zodiac series and the like.

Never is a long time. While I don't believe we will be using gold and/or silver for everyday transactions anytime soon, fiat currencies all rise and fall without exception. The U.S. having the reserve currency will end as well. Only question is timing. The next may be a basket of currencies with a gold backing, who knows. Besides I'm really good at the mental masturbation thing.

Diversification is always wise. The not keeping all your eggs in one basket thing. The only change I would make is the percentages of gold and silver based on the GSR at any given time. Right now maybe 20% silver and 5% gold.

Thanks, I had a similar thought. I re-balance my portfolio once a year. I"ll re-evaluate next time.

I think the permanent portfolio is clever, however the Gov Bonds section worries me.

Mr Ram :), I agree... I can't tell you how many times I had the idea to remove bonds altogether. But this whole permanent portfolio thing has finally given me some degree of portfolio peace of mind because of all the inter-hedging going on. But each time it would have been a mistake. Knock on wood. LOL
