Why do some people have a mass amount of Australian Sea Life coins?

I haven't been into coins that long, just wondering why some people stocked up on these half oz coins.

I have seen some people sell in lots of 10-50, just interested in the story behind that :)

Well.. one day when the continent goes underwater, those will be the most recognised currency XD
(Sorry that's not funny)

They were released while the GFC was going on and loads of people were speculating on coloured coins to make a quick buck.

The clownfish has a connection with Finding Nemo so everyone thought the design would be well recognised and the value of the coin would sky rocket.

It didn't.

Speculation. The Deadly & Dangerous series has pulled some serious premiums over their issue price and SeaLife was released about the time those premiums became obvious.

So if you intend to make $50 a coin profit on SeaLife, buy 20 and make $1000 profit...... didnt quite work out that way but that's the theory.

Same with any investment, shares etc. If you think a share will rise substantially in overtime, you load up ie. more you buy more profit to be made.

just before the release of the clownfish the lionfish was selling for about $150 on ebay so everybody thought the clownfish would do the same. i bought 5 and still have 2 left. no big deal but some people went all in and bought 50-100.

Ahhh history ;)

Some of you guys are getting side-tracked from the main game.
I have been there, made a few dollars out of these coloured coins but they are so hit and miss.
Still holding a carton full of dud issues that they said was a sure thing.
Probably 10% of buyers are genuine collectors; the rest are flippers hoarding these coins to manufacture an artificial shortage.
Best you hoarders flip these coins quickly if the secondary market double its price, cause I am betting the only thing holding up the value of these coins in a few years time will be it's silver content.
Sure these coins are pretty but they will never be a Red-back!
The reason the Redback is getting big bucks is because initially it was a dud. They couldn't shift it when it was released and it never made full mintage. It took nearly 2 years before prices started to move upwards above issue price.
Look at the Great White Shark, it's price never really took off because I am pretty sure they minted the full 5000 and three years later, I am sure a large inventory still remains in the hands of flippers.
