Hi,

I love this coin:

White Dragon 1 oz coin by Perth Mint - blue version

2012 YEAR OF THE DRAGON 1OZ SILVER COLOURED EDITION
http://www.perthmint.com.au/catalog...f-the-dragon-1oz-silver-coloured-edition.aspx

My dealers sells at roughly 90 $, which is way more than triple of its original silver content. 1 oz silver in it has a spot price now of about 22.50 $.
But my dealer promises to buy these coins back for 48 $. Which is interesting...

But:
-mintage is of only 5,000 $
-but the prices on eBay range from 90 $ to even around 300 $ for PCGS MS69-slabbed coin
-I find it especially beautiful
-sold in original box with certificate

I see some potential in investing in these coins. The only thing that's making me think so much is that it's so much way above spot price, so much more than Pandas.

I bought one of these, it would be mainly for numismatic purposes. The silver content has minimal worth.

What do you think? Worth investing?

I think you should disregard silver content when you are buying numimastic coins. If you want silver content, stick to generic.

But If you really like the coin, just buy it for collection purposes. Also note if silver goes down, the value should hold but if silver goes up, the value will not increase as much as your generic silver if you had spent the same $$$ for it

For 90 bucks +

Perhaps consider buying 5 x 1/2oz Lunar snakes or (3 x lunar snake's and 2 x Koala's)...... today.

In 12 to 18 months time, you "may" be able to sell 3 x 1/2oz coins which will allow you to buy your "White Dragon"

That way, you'll get the coin you want plus you'll have a spare 1oz of silver or...if the "White Dragon" novelty wears off, you can keep the 5 coins or use them as a hedge to buy something else. :D

Overall I see you aren't that enthusiastic about this coin. That's OK, be honest, I'm curious about what you would do.

The price seems quite high, but I was looking at the 5,000-piece mintage... and it's nicely boxed with certificate.

I think you have a lot of these coins around with 5000 mintage in box with COA for around $100.
The dragon design is nice, but it has been done and redone and we've seen lots of them.
You may find that a similar kind of coin but the beginning of a new series (with other coins to follow) might prove a better option? It's all a bit of a gamble though.
I have gotten myself a few frilled neck lizard from the new series... we'll see how it goes.

Just my 2cents

I am thinking - probaly I'd hunt for those Koalas with privy marks on them. Even though there are 35,000 of them, they cost around 28 $ and seem to have good numismatic potential.

2013 Pandas sell around 34 $, but the mintage is immense!

Too bad I can't find any 2013 Kookaburras with privy marks.

saw this thread and had to put it out there - for the same reasons as you TreasureHunter - i had to buy it and i absolutely love it! haha

bought it for the coolness of it rather than the silver content...in fact, once i got it , i quite liked the look of it and bought a few other colours...don't really care if i lose value on these, but i figure that it will be hard to come by in a couple of years and because of its uniqueness, should still hold some value..
