I think 2008 was about as "total collapse" as we are likely to get (remember the share market dropped over 50% ?)
The rich and powerful don't want "total collapse", because that would hurt them too, so they won't let it happen. The US bank bailouts were an in-your-face example of that.

The "rich and powerful" will not be able to hold off a collapse forever. Everything bad is on a larger scale than it was in 2008 and the collapse will be on a larger scale. When? At any time but I think a global crisis will be the catalyst....war, disease, etc..... current oil deflation?

If you actually study the history of those empires, their "collapse" was gradual and didn't really affect the regular folk living in cities.

Even during the French and Russian revolutions, and the great depression most people work every morning and went to work.
