What happens when you put 99+% silver in nitric acid?

Silver nitrate is what went on photographic plate.
Exposure to light will make it decompose.

It dissolves.

Must be slowly then.

I dissolved some predecimal and made it into a blob.

The blob should have been 999

For fun I thought I'd put the blob in nitric again.

Basically nothing happened.

The reaction is very slow at ambient temp. Even though the reaction is exothermic, a blob does not have the surface area for the reaction to generate heat at a very high rate.
Try heating the nitric first, then dropping your blob in. Should see much better results.

i've experienced this too. also i've found dilute acid works better than stronger mixes. even heating the solution didn't help much. it wasn't till i diluted it quite abit that the reaction got going.

oh good, I thought I was nuts thinking dilute worked better.

well, errr, I am nuts, but you know what I'm sayin

wow swoydaz a chemistry set would be cheaper wouldn't it?
I am also sure I am not the only one here who would love to see a vid of your work :)

I thought this was the case too, but was corrected by a resident chemist: http://forums.silverstackers.com/message-634761.html#p634761

Plenty of vids up there on youtube.

All show the same stinky brown gas and the same little blobs of silver.

Don't reckon a vid of mine's gunna be any different.

BTW if anybody hasn't tried this it IS a lot of fun.

But it has been ridiculously costly given the results.

From a fun point of view 10/10

From a cost point of view, IMHO 0/10.

I can offer any help if you need it just pm me. I know a little about this type of chemistry.

As an aside try dissolving gold in aqua regia. Not as impressive but you get a lovely coloured solution.

( also copper in conc nitric acid very cool green colour).

Must be time for you to write a 'sticky' then because this comes up quite often!

The goldrefining forum http://www.goldrefiningforum.com/ has loads of FAQs and I have always found them to be very helpful when I ask questions.

I keep thinking that a 'how-to' guide on turning .500 pre dec into a .99+ bar would be a great way to learn about chemistry and physics.

You have your disolving in acid, selective precipitation, melting and pouring, electoplating and setting up the solution for the electroplating etc. But most importantly you would have a parts list and a costings list. That would put more people off than the risk of using acids and elecricity.

Cheers nickybaby, shall do.

i use my silver over and over
in process which is quite regularly
always dissolves for me and quick or slow as i want :P
tis an ART worth learning**
AR works similarly fast slow whatever YOU choose**
but your gold needs to be of low silver content
or reasonably pure before you use Aqua Regia process
ENJOY!
