What do you know of the Pink Lunar Dragon coin?

Hi,

I keep coming across this (supposedly rarer) 1 oz silver coin on eBay and other sources.

It's the same design (besides colour) as the other 1 oz Perth Mint Lunar Dragon coins. Just that it's PINK! :)

It was included in the 10 coin sets. But I rarely see it being sold individually.

It's RARE. Even on the internet. Few references and a few sellers on eBay offering it for sale. Some seller sait it had a mintage of 2,500 pieces. I could not find it on the Perth Mint site through their searcher. It just doesn't appear to be listed...

I like these series of coins, so I was wondering whether it's worth collecting them. 1-2 pieces, at least...

Any other information/opinion would be highly appreciated. :D

That particular coin is the Silver coloured Dragon.

Perth released the following "Official" coloured coins:

Brown
Gold
Black
Blue
Purple
Red
Silver (Not to be confused with the Ag bullion coin)
White
Yellow

Perth's official pdf document "may" not include the coins produced for the Chinese company Baoquan as yet.

The nine coin set (Chinese set) had a certificate of authenticity that states that only 20,000 sets will be released.

Perth's ten coin set released in Australia and overseas had a max set of 2,500 sets.

Individual coins for the coloured coins have been released for various ANDA promotions.

Currently there is no official confirmation of the actual mintage of any of the dragon coloured coins.

Folk won't know the "Declared" mintage until Perth update their mintage pdf document.

Last update was - 22 April 2014 for sales correct as at 31 December 2013.

See page 3 of 7 for the pdf

20,000??? Is that figure correct or you mistyped another "0" in it?

So. Would you collect these?

Or did they just roll out a "bucket load" of them?

Perplexed... :/

I love the design, but confusing (and rather high) mintage numbers.

Would you consider this a good semi-numis investment?

Not a great investment, people were flooded with dragons and they were pretty much done to death, I am still not sure how many types there are or how many of each were actually made.

I have one but only as part of the 9-coin set.

I have seen some of the coloured dragons selling for below issue price (the show coins have been offered for less on occasion). I think dealers holing onto large stocks of these will find inventive ways to sell them on the market and may even sell them cheaper to shift the stock.

I guess it just depends on how many of the 20,000 sets were actually made.

Remember that perhaps the information provided on eBay sales threads is incorrect.

The coin you ask about has not been declared.

The maximum mintage is in the pdf link above.

Lovely coin TreasureHunter, it's nice for the Dragon fans to be able to collect the coloured coins at a very good price. :)

My favourite is the Black Dragon.

Here's a screen shot of the Nine Coin Set COA (Poor quality but...)

Edit
A better shot.

From the pdf from the perth mint website posted above, it is clear that they are minting them. each of the coloured coins can have a 170,000 mintage. on top of that come all the coin fair coins (which are the same coin but with a box and coa) of 5,000 mintage, no top of that the 10-coin sets of 2,500 mintage and on top of that the chines 9-coin set of 20,000 mintage All together each coloured coin will have a mintage of about 200,000...

I feel quite cheated for buying the 10-coin set years ago for 700 euros (about 1,000 USD) when anyone can now emulate the coin set, just without the coa, for about 300 USD or less. i don't think the coa will sell for 700$ seperately to make up for the difference...

Here's a website with lots of coloured dragons. They are the cheapest I can find anywhere and they have them all in stock in great numbers. for example 407 for the yellow dragon only in stock, at just one seller!

My understanding of it was...

They first introduced the 9 coin set in China.. with a expected mintage of 20,000
However, due to the flooding of dragons at that time..
they never made 20,000 as demand for them wasn't as high as they thought it would be
Then perthmint came up with the idea to add a silver coin, and sell them as a 10 coin set to move stock. and this set supposedly had 2.5k mintage.

So even though the 9coinset mintage is suppose to be 20k, in actuality it's way less. some estimate less than 10k were sold. there's speculation of the actual amount - as in original box, original COA.

There is mention of this on a few forums [i cant remember specifically which forum at this point in time]

and then, they still had excess coins - so they sold them in rolls of 20..
as being sold on here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2012-LUN...7179?pt=UK_Coins_World_RL&hash=item27eef793cb

so it's uncertain how many actual real sets with COA exist

and yea, the mint screwed over ppl who bought the set as it had low mintages. I think they were selling at $1200AUD in the dragon mania time

If you like it buy it.

It doesn't matter if the price goes up, down or sideway so long as you like what you purchased. :)

Definitely the black one is the most sought after version.

My idea is to buy a few, get them slabbed and graded, perhaps they'll be worth a lot more in 10 years time. One can never know.

I'd like it if a 35 $ coins would be worth 100+ $ a decade later. Plus, if it's graded, it could go above 200 $.

It could be a nice semi-numis speculative asset. I think...

I don't know whether these are PROOF coins or "just regular", whether there's different minting process involved.
