A mate of mine found this and asked if I knew what it is.

After looking at it through my 2x reading glasses I replied "Buggered if I know."

He didnt even reckon it was a coin but closer examination shows a profile on one side so it is a coin for sure IMO.

It is 28mm wide and about 2mm thick. It has a cartwheel type rim and weighs 7.68 grams. It has been given a couple of whacks with a miners pick unfortunately which is the marks/dents on one side. The lighting in my pics is poor so the colour doesnt look right. Sure it's a copper coin.

It also has a line and possibly fine diagonal knurling around the edge.

I reckon it is a button.

Its not flat due to pick damage. No sign of holes or an attachment thingy needed for a button.

Im thinking a half penny or farthing if it is a coin. No idea though really.

Thanks oz, Im pretty sure thats what it is.

The year and whether it's a farthing or a halfpenny I still cant define. Your example doesn't have a cartwheel rim.

The mystery coin's weight is just under 1/4 troy oz. Considering wear and tear its surely a fractional.

Does anyone know which years fractional cartwheel types were minted?
