Says who? Me (cause I know I have published mock cyclotron running costs)? Information freely available on the internet does not mean factual or accurate.PrettyPrettyShinyShiny said:ok ok ... let's settle this - It's more expensive to create the various conconcted isotopes of gold in labs than it is to mine it.
Yes.wilkes said:Are you talking about a conspiracy of producing these isotopes with short half-lives, or simply obtaining them and selling them as stable gold?

Please supply source. Thanks. Otherwise, stfu.Dogmatix said:Add to this any of the other points SS members have made such as cost of the isotope.
Yes, I mentioned this in Part 2LTEK4NZ said:you forget the fact that half life isnt half the time for all the radioactive isotope to disappear. .
Here is a layman breakdown; if you had one ounce of 195Au (the 'unstable' isotope of Gold with a half life of 186.1 days) and you came back to 'check' on that ounce by weighing it with scales/balances in 186.1 days, you will discover it will no longer weigh 31.1 grams or one troy ounce, instead it will only weigh 15.55 grams (half an ounce). In 186.1 days you would of lost half a troy ounce!

Now, unlike the average researcher out there, my time in researching is approx 2-3 hours before creating thread.
I also try to limit jargon as the average audience is not scientifically apt, hence the excessive simplicity.
Please take this into consideration.
Please take the time to read part 2 and leave a comment. Thanks.
Good to see others interested in Chemistry.

Well not quite. It will still weigh close to 31.1 g, it's just that half of the gold will have decayed into 195Pt instead. You wouldn't be able to weigh it to confirm whether or not something had happened, you'd have to actually do a metallurgical analysis of it. (Although come to think of it, you may be able to tell visually - a 50:50 Au/Pt mix wouldn't really look very golden any more, since as I recall, gold's 'gold' colour is produced by its electron arrangement, which will have been disrupted due to the fact 195Au decays via electron capture).
Notwithstanding this, as someone said before, if there was a conspiracy to do this, it would require a huge amount of energy to produce such a gold isotope in the first place, and would be completely pointless since 195Au ends up decaying into an element almost as valuable (and historically even more valuable) as gold anyway. Makes no sense to concoct a scheme that benefits absolutely no-one yet requires huge resources and effort to pull off.
If you are going to bait, do so subtly whilst adding your lacking constructive opinion.Southerner said:Has everyone taken their tablets today.
Isotope abundance and stability is a subfield of Chemistry under the field GeochemistryLTEK4NZ said:Physics and chemical physics deals with the radioactive stuff.
Thanks.LTEK4NZ said:its is a good topic..and this theory of yours isnt that far out.
Good question.LTEK4NZ said:would the colour of this 195Au even be yellow?
