I consider corrosion damage. Toning is corrosion. When the corrosion is only minimal, then the damage may be seen as negligible to many people (including TPG's at this time) but corrosion, no matter how subjectively pretty, is still damage.

I don't consider antique finishes as damage to a coin...

And how do you think the Mint of Poland obtains the Pena's antique finish?

It doesn't matter...that's part of the design. Corrosion (toning) isn't part of any coin design that I'm aware of. You are comparing black holes to parameciums. :)

You may want to look into the actual antique-finishing process, then.

Better yet, you might not want to.. ;)

It does not bother me at all what they do as part of the design process. Even if it was something resembling what the Goddesses of Olympus coins are subjected to, I don't consider it a damaged coin because the antiquing is an intentional part of the design. Corrosion / toning that isn't part of the design constitutes a degradation of that design. It's very straight forward to me....I have no ambiguity about what is damage to a coin (degradation of the design) and what isn't. After production corrosion / toning is not part of any coin design that I'm aware of....it's definitely not something i want on any coin I own.

If I would be so into degrading my coins' surfaces, I would just tone them with a liver of sulphur / alcohol bath lit aflame technique.

No thank you...I like my silver coins to look just as they were intended to look.

So, what you're saying, then, is that it's okay for the mint to intentionally "damage" the coin.. But heaven forbid it occurs naturally (Mother Nature) or inadvertently (as with album toning)..

Got it. :)

I happen to think Mother Nature/the owner(s) oftentimes does a much better job, producing some pretty cool & unique, one-of-a-kind stuff.

But, to each his/her own.. I guess that's what makes a market, a market!

Time for me to create a coins whos purpose is to tone over time. Perhaps make a design then touch each separate part with something to cause different chemical reactions and then in 10 years have yourself a fully specifically colored toned coin. Like watching a chia pet grow!

I don't consider a coin to be damaged if it's design calls for antiquing. I do call a coin damaged whether it is degraded after production due to corrosion (toning) or degraded by PVC off-gases, or any such things.

It's really very simple...I don't pay for corrosion attacks on my coins after production so I don't want toning on my coins. N'est pas? ;)

But I agree, to each their own.

Heh, could be wrong, but looks like artificial toning to me.

I stand corrected..

I'm sure the pictures do this thing no justice. I'm sure it is stunning in real person. You know like pictures of the goat skull vs seeing it up close and personal? :D
