The Shasta County Sherriff's Department says Kevin Peel was arrested Friday in the city of Anderson.
The department says Peel became a person of interest early in the investigation, which began in October when several packages containing precious metals went missing.

If there is evidence of theft, it would be returned to the victim. No evidence allows for civil asset forfeiture, and the state assumes ownership unless he can prove they were attained legally.
End result, police get the gold, thief walks free, and honest citizen is out of pocket and denied justice.

US asset forfeiture is crazy. I can understand having to fight an impossible drug war in a time of falling budgets difficult but It's getting out of hand. Having the police keep what they seize is a recipe for disaster even if the overwhelming majority of the police are well meaning. That and militarization of US police forces is creating a serious rift between the police and the people.
