US sliver dollars, Morgans vs peace dollars

Silver Stacker
I've been very kindly indulged by a local coin store (shout out to the friendly guys at I.S.Wright) who have allowed me to pour through their sliver dollars and pick out the nicer ones. I'm not great at picking out the higher grade coins (I'm sure in part that im subconsciously preferring the the shinier ones even if they aren't the least worn) but I've picked a few anyway. I'm 95% sure they've been gone through to check for cc and rare dates but I still think they're pretty great. I know given the market at the moment I should be spending my money on low premium stuff but this tickles my history bone. These dollars were popular on the frontier, you can just imagine them paying for revolvers and fire water :)

They have a few tubes of late series Morgans mixed in with the peace dollars and here comes the question. Should I be favoring the Morgans over the peace dollars even if they aren't quite as nice? I know usually they are valued a bit higher but these are later dates (1920's) and although I've picked a few nice ones I'm on the fence on a few. There's some left to go through and I can't decide if I should be leaning towards the Morgans.

While we're at it let's have some gratuitous sliver dollar pictures (if people are interested I'll take better photos in the daylight):

If you have some get 'em out and show them off, here's as good a place as any.

I don't have a peace dollar... Maybe you could sell me one of yours? :)

Have one Morgan:

I'll trade you a giant pile of them for that glorious golden eagle! Would 50 do it? It's a beauty!

That's a very nice morgan. Both coins can be hard to grade because some portions of the coin don't wear much at all and on the peace dollars particularly some of the wording like the America/UNUM can seem pretty weak even though it's not from wear. That looks pretty dammed strong morgan to me though.

Anyone have convents on the medium grade morgan vs peace dollar choice?

Morgans and Peace dollars are both good to own but for many of the dates, the grade has to be in mint state for it to have significant or even decent numismatic value because for many of the dates, millions were minted.

I remember on eBay like 2 years ago, someone was selling rolls of 20 of Peace Dollars (I don't remember the year) that were never put into circulation (mint state)...for what seemed dirt cheap. My money situation at the time was worse than it is now and I couldn't grab a roll or two. Now of course, just because a coin hasn't been put into circulation, doesn't mean it will necessarily grade high (above 65).

.

If all things are equal and neither are key dates I would favor Morgan over Peace because I think the design is stronger. If none are key dates than I would favor those in best condition. But if the price is good and close to spot I'd grab as many up as you can. That's me though.

Not really close to spot in fact it's about double spot but I love them anyway. It's silly because I should be buying low premium silver at the moment and instead I'm buying average condition sliver dollars, 37 crowns, pillar dollars and sovereigns.

Maybe I'll put some up on the forum for silver trade @1.5 ounces each. I might have bought a few more than I need on reflection. Not the end of the world to have 5 or 10 but I don't need 25.

Is it wrong that as a US stacker/collector, I've yet to pick up even one of these?

I'm slooowly warming up, though. Have been for a while.

Nice coins/photos, y'all..

Doesn't it get under your skin? Manifest destiny, buffalo hides sold for sliver dollars, a handful of them used to buy a winchester '73, being used in a poker game or to tip a lucky bus boy in the roaring 20's. Plus they are great big brilliant looking sliver coins.

You might be able to get them cheaper in the states. Your lucky to pick them up here in the $35-50aud ($28-40usd) range. I dream about picking a pile up at spot. These big coins are a weakness, ive been buying crowns and silver dollars and other big silver odds and ends.

If you ever find them cheap in bulk in the states you should let us know. Maybe we can arrange a big order for everyone on the forum and spilt postage.

I know I shouldn't be playing with them but a couple of the more worn ones are past protecting. They make the most satisfying click when you stack them.

I think your ok...I didn't even know these existed until 9 months ago....but then again I was also pronouncing "Libertad" as "Libtard" and thought it was a deaming term for a stupid Leftist person until I googled it.

I went on a Morgan binge in November and picked up like 20 Morgan's of varying years... I like them. It don't really care if there worth not much more than spot. A coin in xf condition after 130 years is good enough for my collection!!!

Would like to help, but probably not the best stacker for the job.. Just don't have the experience in these. I'm sure others might step up to the plate.

Oddly, I'm not a huge fan of US coins, overall.

I'd say these are my favorite so far. Both are pretty darn hot in person, IMO. (Not my exact set; nor my photo, which could be better -- but you get the idea, look 'em up if not familiar!)..

^ Very nice coins Gatito....certainly a couple of the best Eagles produced to date by the US Mint.

I know they're really busy with minting ASE BU's, for example, but wish they'd maybe scale back on that, perhaps capping the mintages -- and instead do more of this kind of thing (with other / new designs, too).

Obviously they have the capability, and the results are impressive. They could easily give some of the competing mints a real run for their money.

Anyway, one of my issues with Morgans is the sheer number of varieties & mintages. I've poked around before, and it's just silly.

Not to mention the price-tag on the higher grades.. :o
