Troy Pound (LBt) = Troy Ounce (OZt)

I'm sure this topic has come up before, but I was unable to locate the post using the search engine.

Can someone please tell me what the true troy weight is - lb v oz

I was under the impression that 1 troy lb = 12 troy oz

Yet I notice that Apmex are adverting a 1/2 lb ASE as being 7+ oz

So I'm just seeking clarification

1 lb = 16 oz = 16/1.0971428 ozt = 14.58 ozt

which is most likely why they were saying 0.5 lb = 7+ ozt

There was a weird generic 1/2lb round a few years ago that came out with the wrong lb being used on it.

I have a giant half pound flying eagle/ morgan mint from the morgan mint.. think its 8 troy oz -- something about it not weighing half a pound.

1 troy lb = 16 troy oz

Does anyone have a 1lb round that they can check on their scales.
My scales are too small to check mine.

No, no troy pounds and troy ounces are different to common pounds and ounces used for normal reporting of masses (which technically are referred to as "avdp" pounds and "avdp" ounces - but the avdp is rarely mentioned).

According to my conversion software:
1 troy pound = 12 troy oz
1 troy pound = 13.16571 oz

In the avdp (i.e. avoirdupois system, which is the standard for general mass):
1 pound = 16 oz
1 pound = 14.58333 troy oz

And, for completeness:
1 troy oz = 1.09143 oz

So, to correct your summary:
1 troy lb = 12 troy oz
1 (avdp) lb = 14.58333 troy oz
1 (avdp) lb = 16 (avdp) oz

Sounds like it is a 1/2 avoirdupois pound round.

Yes, that helps.

There are 5,760 grains in a troy pound - so half a troy pound = 2,880 grains.

2,880 grains = 6 troy ounces (exactly since 12 per full troy lb) or 6.582857 (avdp) ounces.

Unfortunately though that would indicate they are using troy pounds rather than avdp pounds so means that there isn't any way that it can be 7+ ounces [EDIT - Unless as GP said, there were some funny ones in the wrong pounds from a few years ago].

Since precious metals are typically in troy weights, it would seem to make sense for a half pound silver ASE being in troy lb's.

[For completeness, 7,000 grains = 1 (avdp) pound. There is no such thing as a "troy grain" thank goodness.]

Hi,

My half pound flying eagle walking liberty washington mint heavy gold plated silver medallion is 1/2 troy ounce silver.. i have since thought the heavy gold plating was the differential.. this was the early 80's.. but i kinda doubt that it would be that laden with gold.

i can weigh and check my COA this evening..

RE: ADV ounce.. i have never seen gold/silver in ADV so that would be highly irregular (totally wrong)
