After reading the whole creditcrunch vs phoenix thread, it got me wondering what is considered "acceptable" toning to everybody on the forum. Are people expecting bullion/reduced prices once there is toning visible or does it depend on the coin itself (i.e. age, still sealed in rolls, rarity, etc)?

Comments please!
 
As noted above, full disclosure is always necessary. Some people like toning on older coins (usually as long as it is not artificial), and others like coins to be pristine. It's all up to personal preference and taste. Never assume what you like is the same as what others will find pleasing.

As I mentioned above, it's all up to personal preference and taste. Never assume what you like is the same as what others will find pleasing. But a Brazilian wax is always a good bet for a first date, and maybe a touch of vagazzle if you're going for the party look.
 
I guess it is a combination factors, but for a premium coin, a discount would be warranted.
And the discount level would be based on amount of toning and milkspots vs rarity and demand.

If you offered a high premium mint 1oz coin for $70 (the going rate for the coin) and another seller offered the same but toned coin for $70, I know I will buy the mint one. So mostly the seller will reduce the sale price.

If the tonning t is minor and clearly verified by photos a buyer might by it $60. A massive fugly tone maybe spot.

But toning unlike milkspots can drive the value up too
 
Il pop my 2 cents in here.
Any toning on coins/rounds should always be mentioned in the sale if the seller has gone to the effort of calling said coins/rounds MINT.
MINT to me means that the c/r are as crisp and clean as the day they were produced.
 
To me, it depends on the 'look' of the toning more than the coin. In general, I don't want toning on my coins but coins that are older than 50 years....well it's going to be hard to find one with no amount of toning that hasn't been dipped. As for dipped vs toned? Depends but generally I prefer no toning because I actually like to see the design and if obscured by tarnish....eh, generally not so good.

I will admit that natural rainbow toning can look appealing. I think it was mtforpar recently posted a pic of an ASE he recently purchased that had very appealing rainbow toning.

Missing the point. Before have sold Mouse Lunars and Ox Lunars on eBay advertised as mint condition coins straight from a sealed roll which they were. Then had buyers ask for refunds due to a small spot or defect in minting. Sometimes can crack a roll then have a run of 10 or so coins with spots or minting defects in same place on coin. Will take $20 over spot a coin for the S2 Mice if that is your offer. Can do Goat, Horse, Privy Dragon, Snake and Ape too $20 over spot. Free postage for bulk orders within Australia. Sign on delivery too! Well packed. Boxed and plenty bubble wrap.
