To dig or not to dig.

So first off my detector finally arrived :)

After having a bit of a play around in the backyard I came across a strong signal registering in the low 80's And approx 8" deep (on Garrett AT-GOLD).

Out of curiosity I started digging but due to bleeding knuckles and a great big hole that was starting to emerge in the lawn I gave up. I dug about 6" or so and hit rocks.

Now my question to the pro's out there, would you continue to dig this target? What is it likely to be in a modern backyard?

How big is your hole? Is it the size of your coil or are you trying to exactly dig it?

If the target is relatively large and solid you may not be centered over it. A large target well in the detectors range can send the strongest signal to the side of the coil rather than centered under it. The target may be in the side of your hole. Centering can be tricky when starting out. Round objects like lead sinkers are very hard because of their round surface. To centre best sweep over the target from one direction, then do the same from a 90degree angle. This gives you an "X" to literally mark the spot.

Make your hole wider before going deeper. A coin would be a good first up effort. :)

Its definitely deeper, the AT-GOLD has pinpointing ability plus I'm using a Pro Pointer :)
 
Still make sure you dig around the target. Try and avoid damaging whatever it is.

Geez Squiggles, thought you were keen. You've given up digging your first thing.

You should be out in the yard now getting it. Sacrifice a couple of bits of cutlery if you have to. :D
 
I've got a Scottsdale silver round. I will give away, If anyone can guess what Squiggles is gunna dig up ;)

No rules :cool: guess away :P

If there is no correct answer, maybe Squiggles can draw a guess what it is miss Jane picture! :P then have a plug from that. ;)

My guess is a 1944s shilling in aVG condition that someone has drilled a hole through and made into a pendent and given to their lover. The reason it would be in the hole is that it was probably burried with them. :o :lol: ;)
