To clean or not to clean a kilo bar?

Hi guys

Advice required here. I have a couple of older kilos that have a little potential premium in them, and I'm thinking of putting a tester up on eBay (reluctantly - driven by the eye-opening prices requested and presumably achieved). I always thought that the purple toning of an older bar was part of the character, but I've also been advised to clean 'em up.

Any thoughts or wisdom to share?

I think premium on vintage bar usually only reflected on smaller oz...like 1 to 10. Unless it is some sort of bar that have hardcore followers (US based).

Keep an eye on that old PM 1kg bar on ebay, that should be a good indication.
 
Noooooooooo way would I clean it unless it was really really bad toning or really dirty. Smaller bars it's way more important not to clean but I would cringe at even cleaning any sized bar, even 5 kilo bars I would not clean. Why don't you throw a pic up of the bar so people can see.

Nice 50 oz too Oz....... These get a really nice purplish tinge to em :)
 
Post a pic for a vote. Nothing like a good cloudy ammonia soak to clean up silver - but if its a nicely toned bar, leave as is.

Maybe I should photo-etch a logo into it and sell it for advertising space...
 
Seeing the picture....no. thas mellowing nicely. If the bar still in production...i will clean the tutrle out of it.
 
OK - the nays have it. The bar will remain blessed and untouched.

I know I'm late on this one but imho:
Best to NOT clean old bars, the buyer can always clean it up if they like but I'm not quite sure how you go about "Un-Cleaning" one ;)
 
Poured bars do take on some character that extruded bars don't have when they are toned/tarnished. If it was an extruded bar I would clean it. Saw a video on Youtube where the person took a bowl lined with aluminum foil added scalding hot water (helps speed up the cleaning process) add baking soda to the mix and add your dirty bar. Let sit for a while. Add more hot water if need arises. And wahla the bar came out clean as a whistle. I have some Engelhard one ounce bars I bought from a person on another site that had stated that they where BU condition, but when I received them in the mail. Not so BU. I am going to try this on them. I can't complain to much when silver slide to $26 and some change I bought these for $2 over. I'm fine with that.
