Tips for new stackers

Thanks for the thread guys.

I'm new to this caper and picked up the bug from my old dad. I find a lot of jargon and acronyms are used on specialist forums like this one and I'm still learning.

I like the advice to buy 1966 50c Pieces. I remember when they were first released and then disappeared. Rocky, the kid next door was given one for his birthday when they first came out and we all thought him lucky and rich! He lost that coin while we were all out in the yard playing that day. Poor kid, I remember how miserable he was. I later found that 50c Piece months later in the grass next to the fence. I distinctly remember handing that coin back to him and his mum wouldn't let him take it. She said I deserved to keep it for my honesty. I always wondered if Rocky was given a replacement. The things that stick in your mind huh?

Well, I don't have any 50c Pieces yet but will start collecting some. I have been buying 1937 Crowns from between $25-32 lately. Are these considered reasonable coins to stash away too?

Don't pour everything you have into silver, then anticipate the "to da moon" hypothesis to quickly make you a genius - cause you will be dissappointed.

Yep! I reckon the Crowns are a good buy at that price...Just a bit over .8oz but they always seem to attract a price of around spot for 1 oz plus at times a dollar or two extra.

Now if you find a 1938 one for that price you will be regarded as a legend stacker! :D

I have been doing alot of reading online, and some research and have bought a few bars, but the only container I could find was a chinese food container to hold the bars.
Does anyone have any tips on boxes, etc.
If I try picking up three or four bars, they are too heavy, so I would imagine that one would have to limit the number of bars per box.
Anyone have any tips on small boxes that could serve as containers for silver 10 oz bars?

200 Day Moving Average. really just helps to stop my instinct to chase the price up which usually ends in tears (little silver ones :P )

4 10oz bars is only a kilo - not heavy

What about cardboard postage boxes from the post office or office works
Built strong enough to survive the postage system

Maybe get one of those little petty cash safe, they are $20ish from Bunnings.
 
i got a antique army lock box / cash tin with a key off ebay for $15 bucks.. it is heaps more styling than the new ones you will find in Bunnings.. have a lot around. you might even come across a mini treasure chest to put your booty in :)
finding a cool box to keep it in is almost as fun as buying the shiny stuff its self :P

What would count as 'cheap'? I was thinking of purchasing some silver buffalo rounds but after reading that I'm starting to doubt myself.

They seem recognizable enough and of course they're much better value than the other options apart from the Johnson Matthey 1oz bars.

In light of this is it better to pay a $1.50 premium for say some maples or harmonics?

Any feedback would be appreciated.
 
i dont think there can be any better advice, im sure most of us can look back and wish we started with more patience, some things can only be learned with time..

Start slow cos more than likely you'll be making poor decisions and wont understand the market you are buying into. Dollar Cost averaging covers this but also up-skill knowledge if you dont want the "simple silver' investment like 1 kilo bars.

Not all ounces are equal.

Most reputable coins/rounds will come in troy ounces, these are 31.1 grams.

Ounces of sugar, butter, drugs or other non precious metal object are generally avoirdupois ounces and only 28. something grams.

This can be an easy mistake, particularly when buying Stirling scrap for what seems like a bargain.

Buffalo are hugely recognizeable.

Maples will never appreciate numismatically, and neither will buffalos.

So go for the cheaper of the two :)

Last i saw Buffallo, it sit there in the corner of the window display...for 5 weeks. Thats with a massive dip in between. Saying that Maples and milk spot is too common found in the same sentence.

I would second the advice of nuying small and different stuff...so you can learn the difference of buying/stacking/selling them. Saying that, silver in this forum goes by flavour of the month/season. Before it was the 10oz stacker bar...now maybe S1 lunar...who know whats next.
 
My suggestion is to stack with your sell strategy foremost in your mind.
 
Sell strategy, what's that? Why would you ever want to sell?
