Time to start the 5c collections

Sure .... just check your banks terms and conditions as some have certain hours they only change coins, and if you go to a bank other than your own, they may charge you a fee for counting all the scrapnel. :P

Copper and nickel prices are up in the last 30 days ... could be a better investment than silver. :lol:
 
If they scrap the 5cent they'll also have to scrap the 10 and 20. As they all weigh the same ie. The 20 weighs the same as two 10's and four 5's.

Edit to add: the 10 and 20 will probably have to be replaced with something cheaper like steel or aluminium.

Wouldn't the manufacture price for a 5c be higher than 10c or 20c? Sure the material cost is relative to it's face value but as I understand the arguement, 5c say cost 6c to make, but the 10c is 9c and 20c is 18c?

Like the additional premimum on a 1g bar or 1/2oz compared to a 1oz...same material but more manufacture cost...

Several asian coins use aluminium for their coins and they're so light they don't work in vending machines very well.

Also during WW2 the U.S. contemplated using Aluminium coins (because even the stainless coins were rusting) but this idea was canned by the surgeon general because aluminium doesn't show up on X-Rays.

I guess they were worried about people ingesting, choking or otherwise hurting or inserting themselves with coins!

surely the decision to dump the 5 c based on its increasing production costs isn't the issue?

For me, the issue is the seemingly accepted move towards a cashless society. The concept of "production costs" appears to be a weak excuse as part of the ncrementally removal of cash or desensitising us to the notion of the government removing forms of tender.

NZ cut the size and used a cheaper material. they are rusting already..
 
I think if you want the privilege of supplying and controlling the money supply it should have intrinsic value.
