The unwritten rule of trading.

What about people like me? I had an 'awkward' experience purchasing something from someone on this site and probably should have left a negative rating for the initial transaction.
My thoughts though, were that my negative comment would have been the only negative comment against this person (from me - a lowly 'newb' buyer with ZERO ratings and NO cred) V's dozens and dozens of only positive ratings (from people with lots of trades with GOOD ratings - LOTS of cred) praising the seller.
Where does this leave me and other people who are (or are perceived to be) 'newbs'?
In the end I chose to do nothing lest I be beaten down. I often wonder if any other 'newbs' have had a similar experience to me with this particular seller. I (and everyone else) will probably never know.

Fair effeort coming from someone who carried on like a two bob watch because someone asked you via a trade related PM what area you live in and what profession you were involved in. But obviously you think its all good to expect people to post their PM trading business info for all the world to see. :|

I have a post in the Gold Coin section about my experience.
Short story;
Made contact with seller to buy a gold coin (sovereign). Seller asked my SS name. I sent $. I received coin. Coin was a dud (fake / copy / whatever you want to call it). Alerted seller who replaced coin with genuine one. All good (apparently).
I'll never know if it was a genuine mistake or not.
Always had a gut feeling that my 'newb' status was checked first (seller asked my SS name remember) prior to the coin being sent. I don't know though...
I'll probably never know.
People just need to remember that apparent 'newbiness' is not always so.

If I see someone without feedback, I ignore the thread.
Peace of mind is far more important to me than just getting a quick/good deal.

At risk of sounding paranoid, as the trading ramps up and you may be buying a lot of stuff through the site and with the nature of this site, there has got to be someone who eventualy gets a nasty idea about finding out where you live.
I am currently staying at a place where there is no mail box and I didn't realise that you can get things sent to care of your local post office. Did everybody know this? I trust too easily but I think that even when I do get a place with a mail box I will continue to do this with all my parcels, not just pm trades.
Just an idea.

The intention of the thread was to highlight some of the hostility and disdain on display towards new members in the trading forum. I see no need for comments that question the integrity of new members or bag them out for not first introducing themselves in the new members section. It's ugly and benefits no-one. On the other hand, "polite or helpful" suggestions about how to negotiate a newbies first sale can have a positive lasting impression rather than leaving a nasty taste by dumping all over for some people's first thread.

Capitalized words were also emboldened. Maybe doing something like this here would help the newbies, allay current members suspicions and save everyone a whole load of time...

I personally think that would be an excellent Idea for SS, though the 45 day limit seems a bit extreme to me. Maybe a post count or some other limiting condition such as posting in the intro forum etc before having access to the open trading forum or a week before access along with a minimum post count or whatever. The major problem with established members seems to be newbies going straight to the sales forum with no history on the site and the drubbing they get there as a result. Something like this would be a good thing for all concerned I think.

But then who is to say that once they are established they could rip people off? Even if you make them wait 100 days n 200 posts to be able to trade they will still be subject to ridicule because they have no trade history. People need to start slow with a coin here or a 1oz bar there not a 15kg pamp box that you have to pay 150 to open n re-seal

Pretty good idea House. There is a similar rule on Overclockers Australia with their trading forum for computer parts and the like but it is 90days that you have to be a member for. It seems to work well.
I don't know if you need to have a post count, I am sure there are plenty of people that just like to lurk and not post. Could also lower the quality of the discussion with people making post that have no contribution to the discussion just to get their post count up so that they can sell goods.

Face to face meets should be done just between the members not with backup girlfriends/boyfriends/bodyguards etc.
