I said go Chip to encourage him on his quest for the Monalisa but he hid not purchase this one.....
The purchaser will remain private as per our agreement but I published the price as so many people were keen to know how much this RARE bar sold for.

Not sure what that has to do with anything.
I assure you that the vast majority of the public in the US has never heard of Engelhard, either..
(And they'd probably think "Perth Mint" is some new product to put in their mouth to freshen their breath. :lol: )

Not to crap on those who are paying serious money for old silver, but, it's seriously risky play from an investment point of view.
There are people out there with hordes of old PM silver, and I bet grandchildren waiting for that will to kick in. Does not take big numbers to completely screw premiums in this game, and if you think that's unlikely to happen there is more than 1 member on this forum quietly having a chuckle.

Interest in buying Silver bars is ever growing but when many of these older style bars were made the average Joe blow thought Stirling was the best silver. Many of these bars would have been bought by those with an excess of cash and with intent to be passed on as wealth,and not too many with an excess of cash in WA would have ever found themselves in a positions to have to cash these bars in to be melted!
Take a look at the PM round on All Engelhard http://allengelhard.com/the-collections/lesser-refiners/perth-mint/ There were less than a thousand minted same as many of these bars and I already have 4! These were possibly all most common visitors bought as a memento.Investment grade silver ingots were not a memento item and the reason they do not surface. bought in bulk stored in bulk.
Nobody storing silver as wealth is going to cash in oz,s of silver "new lamps for old"! I think Most of these bars would still be locked away and almost forgotten about apart from the few bright sparks who realize an oz of silver is no longer just an oz of silver and they wouldnt be silly enough to flood the very profitable collector market they discovered.
