Last week a 12 oz. silver Panda medal auctioned on eBay Germany for $14,726 (US)*. A Shanghai auction saw a pair of Panda gold medals sell for nearly $6,000 apiece. For a long time many people thought that Panda medals would forever be overshadowed by the coins but it looks like that is ending. Of course, many Panda coins are moving up in price, too.

i just mean, with pandas in general, there are soooo many fakes out there, I simply refuse to buy any. In my casual travels i have seen or been shown fake 1oz gold, 1oz silver and 1kg silver pandas. You have to really be on your toes. Just puts me off wanting to buy any.

I was thinking about buying some painted proofs, they are so cheap right now compared to any other proof Pandas. Think they could be a good investment.
 
Nowadays there are too many fakes of nearly everything. I wouldn't buy anything that I'm not familiar with, or at least have someone I can ask about it. One reason to get familiar with Chinese coins in general is because genuine ones are rising in value so much. I try to answer questions about Pandas on this board, but for anyone really curious I suggest taking a look at the Chinese Coin Forum: http://china-mint.info/forum/index.php. There are folks there at every level of knowledge from "I just got one of these for Christmas" to some of the world's outstanding collectors, investors and experts in Chinese coins. The tone of conversation is very friendly, too.

You're right, they are extraordinarily cheap compared to other Panda proofs. The official mintages are higher than most proofs but those figures only represent the maximum that could be minted, not what was actually struck. I think you are may be on to something.
