India 'gold man' battered to death

An Indian man who bought one of the world's most expensive shirts made entirely of gold has been allegedly battered to death, police said.
Datta Phuge shot into the global limelight in 2013 when he bought a shirt made with more than 3kg of gold and worth $250,000 (186,943).

The police said some 12 people attacked Mr Phuge, 48, in Pune on Thursday night.

One of the suspects had invited Mr Phuge and his 22-year-old son to celebrate a birthday at an open ground in Dighi area when the men attacked him with stones and a sharp weapon.

Police said the son had witnessed his father being murdered and had been spared by the alleged killers.

"Some people ask me why I'm wearing so much gold but it was my dream. People have different aspirations. Some elite people want to own an Audi or Mercedes, and have big cars. I chose gold," he told the BBC in 2013.

What was the reason why they murdered him? The article didn't say. Was he wearing his gold shirt at the time? 12 people take a cut from it?

Whatever reason, flaunting your wealth in impoverished nation is not smart.

Should have had aspirations to collect Kevlar then his shirt might have helped him. RIP

In a group of more of than four, they are savages ( in India ).

I go walking in Delhi on my own with no problems even in the underground subterranean markets (although Al Qaeda used to kidnap dills like me from Delhi) I reckon the "apex gang" in Melbourne is more dangerous.

Any people that out number you can always pose a problem, walking around like you own the place "can" help.

But saying that I get your point, poverty can pervert things even more that is true.

Maybe he should have lined that gold shirt with Kevlar.

And what sort of serious PSD will his poor son have? :(

.

So I was reading further. Political ambition AND a tendency to 'shortchange' his clients, apparently. Probably a perfect politician. Karma? Probably.

Disturbing news. A man beaten to death is no laughing matter. Those people want to condemn him, but do we know the real facts?

He was a lender, yes. But was he a disreputable one? For some, a lender becomes "evil" when they expect the loan to be paid back.

What a shock.

Mr Phuge, whose wife is an NCP corporator, had a money-lending and chit fund business. He had faced allegations recently of short-changing his customers.

Short-chaning customers. These are just allegations. Most of us don't know the truth, right? But a man seemingly obsessed with gold from a young age, and then showing off his wealth like this, and then chasing fame and political ambition...a man like that strikes me as someone who would step over anyone for riches. But of course I could be wrong.
