You know you are a hardcore stacker when you need an industrial hoist and a buddy to help you arrange your stack.

But I guess back in those days you could get maybe a stone of silver for two shillings and a couple of pence from a fellow stacker down at the local tavern while sharing a firkin of ale.

Nearly right. I know these guys...the Hunt brothers, for sure.

A cautionary tale of greed and recklessness :)

The Hunt brothers had 100 Moz at a moment, that's 10000 of these bars.
Btw, the IShares Silver Trust holds since years now over 3 times this amount of the Hunts.
And yes, they will sell, some day, some week, some month, some year or some decade.
But unlike the Hunts, there is little media coverage. :D

The Hunt brothers, Mike and York, certainly came out of it smelling fishy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Bunker_Hunt
Nelson Bunker Hunt played a very significant role in the discovery and development of the oil fields in Libya, which would later be nationalized by Muammar al-Gaddafi.[4]

He owns the Dallas based Titan Resources Corp, which is involved in the exploration of oil in North Africa.[5] He is chairman of Hunt Exploration and Mining Company (HEMCO).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Herbert_Hunt
In the 1970s William Herbert Hunt and his brother Nelson Bunker Hunt acquired 195 million ounces of silver, worth nearly $10 billion at the peak. When the price of silver collapsed 80% in 1980 the brothers lost his fortune along with his brother Nelson Bunker Hunt in the silver trading scandal called Silver Thursday; together the brothers lost a billion dollars.[2] He went bankrupt in 1990,[3] but came back to power years later.

Btw:
"In the last nine months of 1979, the brothers profited by an estimated $2 billion to $4 billion in silver speculation, with estimated silver holdings of 100 million troy ounces (3,100,000 kg)."
versus
"In the 1970s William Herbert Hunt and his brother Nelson Bunker Hunt acquired 195 million ounces of silver, worth nearly $10 billion at the peak."
Not sure if this is a contradiction, "the last nine months of 1979" versus "in the 1970s acquired".
Maybe the former is an average, and the latter a peak, or maybe not net i.e. a blind sum that ignores inbetween sales, dunno.

Another btw: Mike and York?

It must be a disappointment for the rest of the world not having Australian as their first language.

I don't know if this topic was weird before, but since my last post it certainly became! :D
The first names of the Hunts were not Mike and York.
I never heard of Mike Hunt York Hunt and if it's some Australian specific story then I can only say that the only kangaroos I saw in my life were in the zoo and within a corral of some meat farm around here. :P

The guy on the second pic though, looks a tiny bit familiar to me, what was that comedy series again, police academy? The second pic guy looks abit that police departments chief, according to imdb played by George Gaynes

And btw, nobody can fly over my head, I live in dish hanging in a geostationary orbit above Europe. My stack too btw. :P
