Tarnish on 1998 Perth Mint proof set

Hi All,

I have just been sent a 1998 10oz 2oz 1oz Silver Kookaburra Proof Set. Turns out the 2oz is very noticeably tarnished on the rim, the 1oz has 'spider web' tarnish on both faces and the 10oz has a small amount of tarnish on the rim. Am I right in thinking this kills any premium on the coins? Are they worth any more than spot price in this condition?

I think that's normal with the age.. you basically cannot get MINT condition of any coin without slabbing them.. or placing all coins in vacuum-ed casing... i personally don't mind them as long as no fine/visible scratches on the coin, this hurts more than patina on the coin..

Silver & Patina! A marriage made in heaven. The vaccume of space will only stop it.... Maybe. So enjoy the colour's and never ever clean it

It won't have a huge impact on worth, but ask a dealer.

Cleaning them with the aluminum foil and baking soda method will remove the tarnish without messing up the appearance of the coins. So I disagree with the "never clean coins" philosophy.

Cleaning effects value more than just leaving as is.

Just like having a wife.. you can't always take the good stuff without experiencing the bad days... But you still 'enjoy' having her around...
