Self-service tills - now common in most Australian supermarkets - are opening up a new avenue for theft, with a survey revealing shoppers are making off with billions from supermarkets every year.
The British survey founds shoppers are stealing more than 1.6 billion ($3 billion) worth of items from supermarkets every year.
One-in-five people admit pilfering items at the checkout, but the results suggest people steal regularly once they realise they can get away with it the majority admitting they first took goods because they couldn't work the machines.
The situation may be similar in Australia but if it is the big retailers aren't saying.
