Hello, I have been helping my parents move house recently and amongst all their gear is a fine looking (and never used) cutlery set, I have counted about 80 pieces, presented in a two tier blue case, it looks to be silver. I don't know whether it is silver or sterling silver, some of the knives have 10/10 embedded in the arms where the logo is.
Can someone enlighten me as to it's worth and how good it is. And what kind of silver is it exactly? i always assumed silver was quite fragile.

thanks to all for any advice

Sounds interesting. Got any info on pattern or manufacture date? Are there any hallmarks? A couple pictures might help, too.

Ah the great unknown website Google.com...

RRP seems to be between 500-1,000 and there's a few on theUK Gumtree for around 300 and more on eBay.

All Suissine 84 piece sets for sale are 22k gold plated so guessing yours is too. Nothing about them being sterling silver.

Upload the pics to Imgur.com and then post the BB code link that has
in it.

WOW, that site sounds interesting, what does it do?[/quote]

Its like yahoo but more plain I dont think it will catch on better to just stick with yahoo

That's what we need, close up pics of individual pieces focusing on any hallmarks/logos

stainless steel? looks too silver for stainless steel. My dad said it was silver.
I'm sure the pelican knows what he's talking about.

18/10 is a grade of stainless steel
A typical composition of 18% chromium and 10% nickel, commonly known as 18/10 stainless, is often used in cutlery and high quality cookware

So as disappointed as you are, and as hard as your dad is trying to impress you all you have is some VERY nice looking silver.

If you want to be 100% sure, find someone in your area that offers xrf scanning. Too bad you not in melbourne as Gold Pellican offers this service free of charge for casual users. This will tell you exactly what metal your cutlery is

It's def an 18/10 silverware or more recently called flatware.
It's funny cuz a few weeks ago I just looked at our so called silverware gift set and it turned out be just stainless steel set.

Don't forget that in silver sets usually evenlrything is silver except for knifes where the blade is stainless steel and the handle is silver so some people get confused and write off the set as stainless
