Silly drongo. But I think that trawling through what by now must be millions of tonnes of rubbish for 50 kg of gold id suitable punishment. Not quite Darwin Award status but he has potential.
I learned years ago, when I did Outward Bound, that garbage bags are for ..... wait for it ...... garbage (apologies to our North Americian friends; garbage = trash). My wife has a tendency to throw things without looking - so nothing of any value goes into plastic bags!
My grandmother died. My mother and aunt were cleaning up. Lots of cardboard tubes from toilet paper rolls with the ends stuffed with toilet paper. Grandmother had a fireplace, it was winter, so, into the fire they went. Can't remember who it was who first spotted the $50 notes burning inside the rolls but I do know they both got burnt (minor) raking the toilet roll centres out of the fire! Grandmother had lived through the 1929 Depression and didn't trust banks. What thief would nick hundreds of toilet roll centres with toilet paper stuffed in the ends and chucked under her bed?????
And that's the problem with hiding stuff anywhere and telling no one about it. If you die or are otherwise incapacitated, you'd better hope they read that treasure map you left before chucking your stuff!!!
Does anyone have a suggested solution to this issue? What do you do?

I have sealed envelopes with several relatives containing important passwords and safe combinations that they can open if I get hit by a bus. I make a point of swapping the envelopes with new ones every 6-12 months with updated information (and just to check nobody is peeking).
My family know the envelopes have details for where to find enough of my stack to cover the cost of my funeral and estate expenses, so they'll defiantly open them before they start chucking out my stuff.

my wifes parents about 15-20 years ago:
the mum in law hid 10k at the bottom of the bin....dad came along and did the manly thing back then : ie taking out the garbage
they didn't recover it...ouch... back then 10k was alot of money

ps I metal detect regularly its my 2nd favorite hobby next to video games. I can assure you unless someone knows you're invested in precious metals they wouldn't metal detect private property.
Where live people don't trespass to rob unless they already know something is buried there.
Like two months ago a couple from south FL was on their way to a coin show in central FL and about an hour from my house they flipped their SUV which was carrying over 1 million dollars worth of coins.
You couldn't even get near the site to metal detect.

For instance my stash if you were able to find it you deserve to have it. Just like if you throw it away then you deserve to be called an idiot as the general consensus of the community agrees with.
Id be more worried about letting the government hold it and laws changing over night. Government gold confiscation is a very real fear and plausible.
Laws on precious metals are constantly changing all the time.
Usually only the guys with too big of a stash get too scared to handle the responsibility on their own.

Really there's no perfect solution. You can bury it or hide it but then it can easily be forgotten or misplaced. Telling other family members can help reduce that risk but then word can spread that you've got PM at home or elsewhere. Even storing my PM at GV in Melb carries some counterparty risk (albeit extremely low) since I need to travel 1hr to access it & it's in the middle of the CBD.
