I have been buying 1oz gold coins for a year now, especially the lunar coins. I am not buying gold for only bullion value but a want also them to have semi/numismatic value.

What I am worried about is that since 2011 they have an maximum mintage of 1 million coins which is allot of coins, will this affect the numismatic value?

I think so, others don't seem to care.

It is the main reason I have been buying common date 80s gold pandas, they pop up for bargain prices every so often on ebay - even lucked out on bullionbourse a few times.

Its hard to say , they have steadily increased the mintages on these and the premiums still seem to hold strong . Personally I think when buying gold bullion, pandas and the Australian lunar are the way to go even if you pay a little more.
I agree with Aureus though , there is some good prices on 80s pandas if you know what to look for...

I haven't found a Panda that hasn't appreciated over time ... and that includes the 2011s and 2012s.

I really like that 1985 1 oz at that price ! I would all day buy the 1985 1 oz over a 2014 even if the premium over spot is 100 usd + more on the 1985

Just be careful as that looks like a generic picture, if it was worth slabbing Panda America would do it IMO. Still a good price.

I'm starting out and somehow I'm going from the latest to the earliest. Is that a good strategy ?

always ask for a photo, that is true, I really should have mentioned that.

Generally speaking though the coins are in brilliant condition, apart from a little residue from the plastic my coins have been faultless from what I can see - slab worthy after a clean.

If I was in America I'd be buying, sending to NGC and flipping like crazy.

I bought 1x 2014 Panda at a retail price (I know, high premium) and am impressed with the quality of the relief of the panda itself. It makes the animal stand out from the rest of the coin.

Very impressed and I can see why people go crazy for Pandas.

Thanks yennus. I always had the impression that you own a complete set of 1oz gold pandas for some reason!

That is a good strategy. Also, you can choose to work your way only as far back to 2001 (more manageable endeavor). For the gold Pandas, that is the year when they changed the denominational value (1982 - no face value, 1983 to 2000 - 100Yuan and 2001 to current - 500Yuan for the 1 troy ounce size).

Yep, I do this :)

Hey Yennus, I know it is subjective, but in your opinion, what is the better Panda, the 2013 or 2014? Just curious. Thanks for any insight you can share.

Speaking for myself, I have always loved the water designs, that combined with the three bear design, is fantastic. Only design with three pandas on it, one of my favorites.

Have silver, gold, and even the 5 oz in 2014. They do look better than I thought they would though.
