I made a silver trade with someone on another forum, maybe he'll read this but I hope not. The trade was his 90% coins for my bars and rounds, and the trade was valued at about $1,000. I originally recommended using Registered Mail with the post office, but he recommended just getting insurance and I agreed. Unfortunately we later find out, and some of you will know that just insurance doesnt cover what we were shipping. Its only Registered Mail, which I originally recommended, that will cover the package. So what he sent to me got to me just fine, but what I sent him seems to be missing. Apparently the mail carrier attempted a deliver on January 2nd, which the other guy got this first notice because he wasnt home. However the mail carrier claimed to leave a second notice on January 3rd, but the other guy said he didnt receive the second notice. This was all right around the time of a large snow storm where he lives so I'm not sure how much added time we should give for that. So he went to his local post office and now they cant find the package. So this is going on about 1.5 weeks since the second notice was "allegedly" left. I went to my local post office and based on the latest tracking they said that its gotta be at the other guys post office.
Now if I kept insisting on us using Registered Mail, but he kept saying no just use regular insured mail, then I wouldn't really feel compelled to help him out a bit with the $1,000 that hes out. However I did agree later to use regular Insured Mail. Its probably still a little too early to say the package is completely lost, but at this point I'm trying to debate with myself if and how much I should help cover some of this $1,000.
On one hand he wasnt there to sign for the package the first time and it was his idea originally to send the package with a method that we later find out doesnt cover what we were shipping. On the other hand I did later agree to ship it regular Insured Mail, and I guess it is kind of my responsibility to make sure it gets to him.
I dunno what would you guys do? If it never arrives then say "tough luck" or would you help him cover some of $1,000, or all of it or what?
