I am a huge fan of natural aussie Gold Nuggets. They are heaps of fun to have and to hold.

Each one is unique in size, shape and color, and unlike coins you can play with them with your sweaty hands to your hearts content. I have collected around 30 silver coins but get a lot more fun out of my couple of ounces of small nuggets that I am lucky enough to own.

I am biased because I can get out and find my own nuggets. They are mainly less than half a gram in size but very low maintenence to store and stash. The cotton gloves and never touch approach needed to play with or weigh a coin (gold or silver) makes me feel dissassociated from my treasures but holding and examining my 400 little nuggets is brilliant fun.

Only the precious folk wear cotton gloves to handle their wealth. Fondling it is part of the joy.

400 little nuggets would be quite a decent stack, even if small. A piccie would be nice - what's the collective weight?

Seeing this makes me want to grab a pan, a shovel and a metal detector and bug out in the North West for a month.. :cool:

Hard work but rewarding at times. In my part of Victoria the terrain is very rugged with plenty of steep hills and deep gullies. Many gorse and blackberry bushes to deal with as well. Most of the easier ground has been thoroughly detected so you have to have a crack in places that are harder to work in.

All of these have been found with a minelab detector worth $4500, but if you get a shovel and a goldpan anyone can get out and find a bit of color.
 

Source: My favorite find...so far. I call it The Hamburger.
20.5 grams gross weight. Approx 6 grams of gold.

Ive been detecting for about 4 years but took 2 years to get the hang of it. Its like golf the more practice you do the more consistent you can be. I average around 6 pieces an outing which is normally 5 or so hours. Average find per outing around 0.7 grams. Most nuggets in one day 28 for 2.5 grams. Best single find 8.4 gram specimen. Total nuggets found 4.5 ounces.

Living near a goldfield area makes it an affordable hobby. If you live in an area that doesnt have close access then the cost of fuel and equipment can be a bit of a burden. It helps if you like the outdoors and birds and critters.
