SHTF late 2020 to ... 2030?

Things look like they are going to turn crazy bad in the future... kinda near future.

Realisticially what do people rate their actually survival chances at? Even being moderately prepares wont be enough to keep alive it looks like.

Whats every one elses views? Any sugar and sunshine in the future?
 
Well I'm hoping for what it's worth:
More manufacturing will return to Australia (favorable financial policies provided).
key industries like food, water, power etc. will have a restructure & their importance elevated to an appropriate level.
People after going through the "shock" (yes i know how can people be shocked when they spend more than they earn etc.) of this financial tight rope will re-access whats important, the difference between a need & a want etc. & come down to earth a little.
People having seen being overly dependent on other countries for items will consider buying locally more often, if the locals can compete on a more level playing field.
People may have encountered more acts of human kindness & are willing to "pass it on" a little more frequently or just become a little more tolerant of others.

Generally I'm hoping as a country we will work towards being more self sufficient, greater security within the food, water & power sectors, provide opportunity's for our own to research, invent & produce here, with the Govt creating a more conducive environment for all this to happen. Yes change is slow, times will get tough but Australia has been through some hard times & the people are a pretty resilient lot.
I know Its very non specific, pie in the sky stuff but one can always hope, right !

No the other hand we can always hope for peace but plan for war.

For sure there's crony globalisation, but consumers still get the benefit of foreign made goods.

As far as each for their own, that's a trade war, and like real wars it destroys wealth.

Edit to add: what do you reckon the price at the bowser would be if the government mandated that we use 100% Australian oil?

That is my hope too, but manufacturing won't return to Australia in strength until a couple of important things take place:

1. We deliver reliable power, and
2. We fk the unions off.

You can't run an effective factory without reliable power, so we have to stick it to the Greens, and unions have a nasty habit of running industry out of the country.

Bullshit. Countless, perfectly viable industries chose to leave in the pursuit of greater profits. Unions have always been the scapegoat. FFS they still go on about them now..... And what is the current union participation rate?

Bullshit. I have worked in industrial manufacturing all my life. They don't leave in pursuit of greater profits, they leave to enable them to be competitive and survive. If that were not the case, then we'd be making stuff here.

Yea, sorry for my OT contribution.

I'm not currently concerned about society falling into complete chaos. But I am concerned about the probability of an economic depression. This could lead to wide spread unrest, particularly in developing nations.

Ps. @wrcmad, yes I agree completely. But IMHO it's just become a race to the bottom :)
 
there is better tech and know how somewhere else, efficiency and lower cost
then survival
it was more than 20-30 years in the past
 
i can't see manufacturing returning here unless it is almost exclusively automated. wages are simply too high here to be competitive. why work in a factory for not much when the govt gives you money? that's going to be a problem for UBI. lower productivity and disincentives for those that do work.
 
I was a union worker for 11 years but it wasnt a big corporate union. We were union floor covering installers and were teamed with painters and some allied trades. We installed tile, linoleum and carpets, so that kind of stuff.
It was mostly so we could have legitimate training and a wage scale, some health care and retirement savings and safer work conditions. We also had to serve a 4 to 5 year apprenticeship which I completed in 2 years, and made me a Journeyman.
We didn't have any paid time off or anything free like that.
We were always hired for the biggest and most important jobs and the government work while the non union guys would do the little house jobs and we also did that work as well.

There is good and bad with unions and every union is different. Not all corrupt or looking to steal from anyone.
There are so many different types that it cant be generalized. Some actually are legit and the fellas work hard at it to be the best.
 
That being said there are many corrupt and constantly bailed out unions that shouldnt exist, I totally agree with that. And govt worker unions shouldnt even be legal.

The collapse is already happening here in America and will probably only get worse. There are 5 businesses now on our main street that say they wont be reopening and I imagine it's happening everywhere.
Next week there might be more.

There was a protest here yesterday and I heard they had a good turnout but I dont know what something like that will really do.
We were working out of town but someone said it was on facebook which I dont have.
No one pays attention or cares about protesters I dont think.
They wont change any decisions or be able to throw anyone out of office doing that.
