Show us your coins on display

Hi all,

I'm thinking of getting my coins out and putting them on display in a glass cabinet. What's the point in having them locked away in a dark place?

Is there any issues with displaying them long term? Would they start to discolour?

If anyone else has them on display then please post a pic up. Id love to see other peoples :)

There are a few special coins I would like to display but havn't found a real good secure way of doing it yet. I don't want anything that can just be lifted away. I was thinking of drilling a locking display case to my desk but even that would only take a couple seconds to make away with. It sucks that the coins I am most proud of are generally worth the most.

I started on a display for my Perth Mint 'Year of the Dragon' coins.

I got as far as laminating the mahogany stakes (from the garden centre) and drilling out the holes, I even bought some leather to stretch over the backing board, and then I bought some more 'Year of the Dragon' coins so I have to start all over again.

My main concern is that I don't know what chemicals they used to treat the wood, the glue, the varnish, the leather tanning and dying etc. so the long term storage effects are anybodies guess.

I did a temporary display for a coin show just using cardboard, looked decent enough but hardly heirloom or archival/museum quality...

I just use plastic display stands which you can buy on ebay for next to nothing

This is exactly what I was thinking of using. The question is. Are they ok just on display in their capsules? Is there any long term issues with that?

Get some pics up :)

In low humidity and clean air, they should be OK in the capsules.
And inside a cabinet dust should not be too much of a problem.
Capsules are a must unless you want your coins to end up like this maple leaf.

Coin capsules are generally not airtight because they are a 2-part holder (more-or-less) in which the space between the two parts can allow air inside the capsule. Some capsules may have tighter tolerances than others and it would be those capsules that provide better protection from the elements. Still though, even the tight capsules are not airtight I think.

I suppose you could conceivably seal the area where the capsule pieces come together with something that will not chemically react with silver....perhaps even something as simple as a narrow piece of transparent tape along the edge of the capsule.

Then the display part should be easy...there are many types of interesting and aesthetically appealing coin displays that one can purchase on ebay as just one example. But that would have to be a personal choice because what one person may see as nice looking, another may see as appalling.

I'm so confused why that maple leaf is being stabbed with a toothpick

I've was planning on using those cheap ebay stands inside of a display case if I ever got one!

^ maple leaf is from a watch :) actually only 1/3 of a maple leaf, it has been cut in half and the other side ground down.

Also you can use sa-flips to hold coins. They stand up well enough because they are rigid.
You can seal them too.

These are 2.5 x 2.5 size flips..they don't really fit 1 oz coin capsules.
With a hand held sealer and practice it might be possible to make a proper seal with a 1 oz capsule inside.

Why not have the best of both worlds and use those presentation/storage boxes?

Display them for a while, then when you're in the mood for a change, or need to tuck them away for whatever reason.. No problem!

They make them in all sizes to fit a variety & number of coins.
