set of 1 oz silver kookaburra with original 1990s kooks

Curious would a set of 1oz kooks command a higher selling price if the kooks between 1990-1999 were originals (square cap kooks) as opposed to re-mints ?

I dont have any pre 99 kooks in round caps but I would imagine a full set purchase to a collector would require the square pre 2000 caps to be all square caps and not a mix of both?

Given I am told that you cant tell the difference between original and re mint then a seller or buyer could simply swap caps to make a full set.

When I started buying kooks to make a full set I only bought square cap 90-99 and didnt even bother with the re mints,I also paid a higher premium for the square caps, how many were swapped I have no Idea.

Having a set of kooks with the odd round cap among the square would annoying me personally.

I have a collection of the older proof kooks in the wallets, 2 of the proofs I bought without coa,s. this just annoyed me and I had to buy those 2 coins again this time with coa,s.

If somebody actually did buy a full set cheap enough they would probably already know a bit about kooks so could easily swap the caps out themselves and premium loss on the swapped coins would be pretty minimal.
 
Is there anywhere you can even buy the square caps from (that have 'AUSTRALIA') embossed into them ?

I very much doubt that these are available any longer but suggest that Chip would be the expert on this topic

However if you may like a set of the very original square cap Kooks from 1900 thru to 1999 drop me a PM or if you are only missing some of the years can also assist but some may come with complimentary toning

short answer to your questiom , NO

before they re minted some of the previous years kooks YES

but some one mentioned earlier , it is too easy to open up the square caps and replace with a re minted kook except the 1990 kook

you can not tell the difference between old and re mint kook

also there is no display case to hold the square and round capsules.

but they do for all round capsules

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but all the 1990 kooks that I have seen in the original capsules are slightly toned. I dunno about the years from 1991-1999 though....
 
I think the quality is more imp. than the holder or whether it is a re-mint since the coins are identical. I have a toned 1990 in square holder
and a full set in round capsules all in top shape.

Could it not be the opposite for some collectors? I avoided the re mints when collecting my set and the sq cap originals cost me a higher premium?

My 1990 sq is toned but one other year (cant remember which) has a gold tinge which was particular to that year only.

It was mentioned by silver addict that you cant get a display case to hold round and square together but really the square cap 1990 -1999 are a stand alone set because you cannot just buy original square caps. Its easy to swap square caps to round for display but not so round to square unless you had the original square cap coins.

Square cap kooks get snapped up when for sale on SS while specimen versions of the same coins for instance (as GRETZKY427 knows) can remain unsold with a total lack of interest even with many price reductions.

Some square cap years are quite hard to get so these years are likely the ones that may get there caps or re specimen version case swapped out just to complete a set?

Im just starting putting together a 1oz silver kook collection. Can someone tell me why the square caps would be more popular than the cased specimen type?
What year did the case type cease.

1990 through till 1999 were in the original square capsules

I would say more popular as some collectors prefer the originals over the remints.

Someone is selling to me from our local collector a complete re-mint sets of kooks. Any body can give me more or less the asking price should be? (24 pcs / from 1990-2013). Thank you.

The price is 1270 usd for 1990-2013 (re-mints) would i get justice if i buy? He has 2 sets?
 
i supposed to buy it but when i read about the re-strike version, it stops me from doing this.
 
The only difference between original minted kooks and restrikes is the
square holder vs round cap, which are interchangable anyway so you
cant be 100% sure its original coin anyway.
The square holder isnt as airtight as the round cap so these tend to tarnish sooner.
This is both good and bad depending whether they tarnish well or not


1990 kook has to be original, as it was sold out.

Price wise 1270 USD is over 1800 AUD, a set was recently listed here for sale
at 1100AUD and did not sell, think it was discounted another 50 or so to move

i offered a full set (26 coins)to someone here for 1200aud and I beleive they found better
price, so still have that set.

so IMO $1270 US is around 25% or so over what you could easily do here

Collect them yourself! $1800au would buy you more than 23 2008 kooks the most sort after and expensive year at the moment.

$1270 au dollars is a bit high let alone $1270 us but if you can afford a whole set in one hit then it doesn't matter.

I would start to collect the Koala set if I were you but then again its bound to follow your kook set if you do buy it anyway :)
