Selling gold from grandparents jewellery store

Hi all,

Completely new to this.

My grandparents had a jewellery store which closed down 30 years ago and she's decided to sell some pieces which have been sitting around all that time. I need a little help with getting the best prices for her. These are all stamped, some 9 carat, some 18 carat. Some white gold, some yellow. Some with stones, some without. I don't know whether to sell for gold weight or sell as pieces to add value. Any advice appreciated. Also, would it be worthwhile waiting for gold prices to go up if i'm not in a rush?

Do not be guided by the prices which are attached! It is likely that the gold value is now worth more than the actual jewellery price 30 years ago!
 
There is only one platinum ring Aleks. First photo, bottom right hand corner.

No necklaces that i've come across yet, but there's a whole filing cabinet full, so i'll get there eventually!

Hp1173, Yep. Some of the rings are 5 grams of 18 carat white gold with price tags of $120 so i know not to take those seriously. But some with diamonds priced at $600, i'm unsure how to get the best money for those or what they might be worth.
 
Ask for expressions of interest for individual pieces or bag them into 1/4, 1/2 or 1oz lots and offer them here for spot plus postage. Pick out the ones with the big rocks in them, they may be worth more than that.

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to sell them. You could flog a few off a month and it would keep you busy for the next 2 years, nice little hobby and in the meantime spot may have risen.
 
Buy a cheap thermal diamond tester and check. The top pic fourth low from the bottom second from the right looks like a nice piece. What diameter is that diamond?

For sure some people will make you offers via PM, you can guess that the items concerned are the more valuable :)

Some advise, if I was in your position:

- Don't accept any "fast" deal. Take your time.

- You can put these pieces up for sale here in the trading section. One by one, starting with pieces that you received offers for via Private Messages

- Here's how I would proceed:
1/ ask for offers via PM (not under spot value) and state clearly that you are going to open an auction for the ring after a day / a week, whatever suits you
2/ Open an auction for the ring with the reserve price set at the highest offer you received. If people want it bad, they will bid on it and you will earn more. If they don't, you can sell it to the higher private bider. It is fair.

Keep in mind that the more private negocations are the less money you will get :) Make things public. The game for buyers will be to make you beleive the opposite ;)

Here's a question. When you have some pieces of jewellery that have stones in them, but people are wanting to buy for gold weight.. how do you figure out how much weight is actual gold and how much is Stone?

Hi Rana. Just as a guide, BenRb on this forum will pay spot plus 5% for scrap jewelry.

However with that being said, those pieces aren't scrap so u can easily sell it for more than that.

I would suggest splitting them up if you have the time to get the most out of your sale. As a benchmark, I have seen jewelry here being sold for spot plus 10%.

Measure the stone and compare its cut with at in the PDF. Write down the CT weight and cut. 1 carat is .2 of a gram.

Compare it's colour with those in the diamond colour guide. Write down the colour.
Compare its clarity with those in the example above

Look it up in the price guide.

I like the sapphire surround mount on it. Nice ring, that one is the kind that has easy buyers. The three rings in the first tray may be worth far more than the gold weight if they have diamonds in them, particularly that larger one with the black/blue sapphires around it.

Cheap thermal diamond tester (set it so sapphire is just at the top of the green, diamond should shoot up to the top quickly)

That won't tell you whether it is natural or synthetic or mossanite but it will tell you if it is glass, quartz, white sapphire etc or diamond. It is only 9$.

None of the stones there are probably worth much except the diamonds but the larger red/pink ones may be ruby which should test high on a cheap thermal tester (Ruby is red sapphire).
